I am starting to receive advice from various people to buy a diamond from a wholesaler instead of from a jeweler -- with the aim of saving money by cutting out the middleman. Is this good advice? Any pros/cons? I'm in Texas if you have any recommendations (specifically Houston/Austin) The one recommendation I have had so far is some large, glass building on Richmond that has a lot of wholesalers in it, and in particular some guy named Sam Soloman. Thanks...

Sorry if this is beating a dead horse...I just found some threads through the search function on this topic, and it seems to bring some controversy with it... Any opinions are still welcomed...

Zeppelin Some facts of life, Retailers take a dim view of wholesalers dealing direct with consumers and usually stop supporting them. Wholesalers that do deal with consumers usually do so at retail prices to justify their actions. Pricescope vendors are possibly a better bet Johan Diamond Exchange Ltd. (Australia) |

Zeppelin, Retailers who call themselves wholesalers are fairly common and are pretty easy to find in every city. If they're selling stones one at a time to the end consumer, they're retailers! It's really just a semantic question that has very little to do with whether you get a good diamond or a good price. The big reasons to buy from the storefront guys have to do with the additional support they offer. This may or may not be worth it to you but its part of the decision process. The supposed wholesalers tend to offer rather little beyond the stone itself. Presumably the reason to buy from them is because they claim to have lower prices. This may or may not be true but it's fairly easy to tell. Check the pricescope dealers and see what they have to offer. Talk to the jeweler about it. In the end you will find that this is a very competitive business and it shouldn't be hard to find a dealer that's exactly what you like. It doesn't matter much whether they call themselves a wholesaler, a jeweler, or a diamond dealer. Neil Beaty GG www.gemlab.us There's never a crowd when you go that extra mile. |
