Last night I asked my boyfriend's mother for the ring he is to have inherited to him. (It was his grandmother's band) She gave me her blessings to give it to him for his birthday this month as sort of a proposal. I say sort of because although I know we both very much want to get married, I want to present it to him and give him the choice of it being an engagement ring, or my promise ring to him until he proposes to me. But anyways, want i wanted to ask was, when I go to have it resized, i'd also like to change it to white gold (he and I both prefer it over yellow gold) however there is an engraving on the inside of it? can this be preserved in some way? and #2 if there's any ladies out there that have proposed to their men, i'm looking for some nice things to say. I've been with him for over 4 years, and I think this will be the one thing I'll have to give ALOT of thought before saying to him. EEK! A bit nerve racking!!

You can't change it to yellow gold. You can rhodium plate it, but a) it will wear off and show the yellow (which is worse than just having be yellow!) and b) the engraving won't interact well with it.

Just an amateur, but I believe there's nothing you can really do about this one, within reason. It's a faimily heirloom, be careful with it!

I've never heard of rhodium plating as being THAT bad. sure you have to have it re-dipped eventually, but I really want to do it because my B/F doesn't like Yellow Gold, he likes white. Also I would never do anything to the ring w/o his mother's permission, of course.

You generally rhodium dip white gold, not yellow. Yellow will show much faster (and depending on his cody chemistry, this can be within days), and will look terrible once it starts wearing off. The engraving will also get filled in, possibly unevenly.

If he likes white gold, get him white gold for his wedding band. Please, don't mess with the family heirloom, it's not going to work very well, quite likely.

shanes_vee99,

Rhodium plating wears off fairly quickly along the edges and in other high wear areas. With a white gold ring this doesn't really show up because the big polished areas are what you see but when you rhodium plate a yellow ring this creates a border of uneven yellow surrounding the white. It really looks pretty bad. The same issue applies when you plate 18k yellow on top of 14k to jazz up the color or to make it better match another ring that was made separately. On top of yellow gold this works OK (but needs to be redone periodically) but on top of white it just doesn't stand up to the wear.

I recommend against it.

well, I did it. I took the ring in to the jeweler today. And i want to thank everyone for their input. I'm not having the color changed (it will stay the original yellow gold) I'm just having it resized. i just got off the phone with his mother a little bit ago, she told me she loved very much, and how happy she is that I'm doing this (basically welcomed me to the fam). So now I guess I'm going to ask for any suggestions people might have for the proposal itself (guys especially) I believe the statistics are something like under 10% of engaged couples involved the woman proposing. I've already picked the location (the courtyard behind his old apartments) --it beautiful-- not to mention, it's where we fell in love. I also know some of the things I'd like to say, I just want to somehow give him the option of still asking me... if that makes any sense? Any suggestions?? Thanx everyone!
