I may try to add a pair of diamond stud earrings or a diamond pendant or both to the engagement ring I will give to my girlfriend in the next few months. Although it may be a little small, the earrings would be around .50-.60 ctw. and a pendant between .35 - .45. The ering is a solitare .79 H SI1 so I will probably shoot for H-I-J color and SI1 - SI2 for these other pieces. My question is about the quality of the diamond. I bought the ering diamond from GOG with outstanding optical qualities. In a pendant or stud earrings, is this outstanding quality necessary. Not that I want crap, but do people around here still go after the "best" or do you ratchet quality down a notch or two? Also, I'm just shopping around at vendors and only Whiteflash seems to have stones listed around .25 ct. for earrings. Does anyone know any other vendors that may have this smaller size, but does not list them? Thanks for your help :-) |

Melanie - Thank you so much for taking the time to write :-) I saw your post concerning your new earrings yesterday and I was really hoping you'd jump in here and put my mind to ease. From what you've told me, I feel like I'm right in a good ballpark with my ideas. I sort of felt the same way about the color...I can maybe drop a color or two from H and be in good shape. Especially since she is insistent on yellow gold. The near colorless diamonds shouldn't be affected as badly as colorless would in a yellow gold setting. I won't sacrifice on cut either. It is terrible to see what many people walk around wearing...knowing they probably paid more than what we will to get awesome diamonds. I think the best thing is the trade up feature our vendors here offer. I think all of the regulars offer trade ups at full value. So down the road, my g/f (and future fiance/wife) can upgrade the earrings and pendant if she likes! That is too cool :-) The only thing that stinks is that I am on a super tight budget. I have a small chunk of change saved up right now, but I need a down payment for a house in the next year or so. I feel I got good value for going with H/SI1...probably saved $1000 by not droping to E/F and VS quality for the same size. That's why I'm doing this. That purchase put me well below my $4500 budget, leaving me with about $1500 to play with. I think I may be able to pull this off without sacrificing cut quality.
