Wow--I am in love with just about everything on his website. If anyone has worked with him to design a setting and could share their experience, I would be very appreciative. Also, does anyone have any sense of how his setting prices would compare to other designers (for example, Michael B)?

Hi reena, kayla17 has a ring by LM but I haven't seen her posting much recently. Maybe you could email her about her experience with LM.

Bump ![]() Is there anyone out there who has worked with Leon and who would be willing to share your experience with me? I am giving serious thought to asking him to design a setting for me. Specifically, I'm interested in 1) how the ring turned out (fabulously, I'm sure), 2) turnaround time, and 3) price range for his settings. Any input is MUCH appreciated!

Reena, Leon is currently working on a ring for me. Hopefully, my ring will be complete by the end of this month. I will gladly update you once it is done. I can tell you that his prices are extremely reasonable. Do you have a design that you are considering?

I should have said extremely reasonable as far as custom work is concerned. He is by no means inexpensive.

Oh great, thanks for the input everyone. I am so glad to hear such nice things about Leon (not that I'm surprised!). The pieces on his website are so gorgeous that they actually make me tear up a little! ![]() I am hoping for an approx. 2 carat squarish cushion cut stone, which I want to have set in a very fine micropave setting with a micropave bezel, similar to designs I've seen by Michael B. There is a similar piece on Leon's site (it's under Modern rings 1) with an emerald center stone, and it is gorgeous. Plus, I looooove his claw prongs. I was getting a little discouraged at first, because the Michael B setting I wanted was $10k (!!!) and I hadn't been able to find anything that compared. I had sort of mentally crossed Leon off of my list, because I just assumed it would be that much or more to have him custom design a setting for me. But I gave him a call yesterday, and I was so pleasantly surprised by his quote--he estimated probably between $3-$4k for what I described. I agree with you, SLH, that seems quite reasonable for custom work to me. The only thing is, I forgot to ask whether that was just for labor or included materials, like the stones for the pave. SLH, not to be nosy, but is that in line with the quote for your setting? Did he quote you separately for work and materials? If you don't mind sharing details, I'd absolutely love to hear what you're planning to get! I wish I could have everything on this website.

I hope you have as good an experience w Mark as i did he really went out of his way to make sure i was happy w my e-ring... ERD doesn't get as much press as other companys on this forum, but, after having dealt w two of the other cos (who, btw, were pleasant enough), there was no question in my mind that i wanted to go back to him for my right hand ring "project"

No joke Wink! I mean for the love of g*d...look at those prongs!!! They are amazing...so precise...'absoluite master craftsman' is right. (Too bad he thinks white gold is a "low class substitute" tho. That's a little insulting!)

Reena, The estimate Leon gave you matches the quoute I was given. My qoute was for labor and did not include the accent stones. I am having the ring pictured below made with a few changes. One change is Leon's famous claw prongs (just like Kayla17's ring). I am using a 2.65 Superbcert for the center stone. Believe it or not, Mark Morrell is also making a ring for me ![]() ![]()

thanks for the info--your ring is BEAUtiful. You must be so excited. I wonder, ballpark, how much I should add on for the stones for the pave? The setting will be three sided micropave, eternity style, with a micropave bezel (2c stone, size 4.5-5.) Anyone have any idea?

i dont know how! im so technologically impaired. can you tell me? otherwise, if you go to www.artofplatinum.com, click on "gallery", then Modern 1, and its the emerald ring on the bottom row, second from the right. (but mine would be a diamond.) maybe i'll call leon back and ask whether or not the price he quoted me included the stones for the pave. i wonder how much more they would add to the price if they weren't included . . . im trying to keep the whole ring around $15k, so if I need to budget more for the setting than I need to go down on the stone . . . thanks slh!

Is this the one? I couldn't begin to guess about the price for the stones. This ring has a great deal of pave. Very beautiful. If you are sure that you want this design, don't go to anyone else except Leon.![]()

YES! That's it. I Loooooove it. Can't decide if I want a plain band like in the pic or something a little more intricate (maybe a band that splits into two on the side and then comes back into one band up by the stone), but this is generally the one. Also, may want double claw prongs instead of single! Anyway, this is what I described to Leon and he said $3-4k, so I'll just have to call back and ask him whether he meant with or without the pave stones.

Reena, Leon tried to convince me to use single claw prongs instead of double. I told him no way. Have you seen this ring by Michael B? I have heard that his pieces are expensive. I believe Leon is one of the few people that can recreate this ring and still do it justice. Best of luck to you! ![]()

Superidealist, Thanks for the clarification. All this time I thought people were discussing the same person. Can you give me the link to Michael B's website. I am interested in seeing his designs.

Michael B's website works only sporadically, but it is www.michaelbjewelry.com. I love his Trios collection and also his new flower ring, which is not on the website but I did post a picture of it on this site a few weeks back. (If you're interested, search "Michael B Flower Ring"). Both are very decliate micropave designs, and similar to the LM design I'm thinking of. SLH, out of curiosity, did you want double claw prongs for the look or for "safety" purposes?

Yay Leon! I called him today and he indicated that his price quote did include the price of the pave stones. I'm excited that his pricing is so reasonable (at least relatively speaking, for custom work). I'm so thrilled that I'm going to be able to work with him to design my setting!!! (Sorry, I needed to gush and nobody in my non-pricescope world would have any idea who or what I'm talking about.) ![]() Now I just need to find a stone . . .

---------------- I have a hunch though it may not be correct . In addition to an eye for beauty, metalsmiths often have a pragmatic nature. If something needs double prongs for security they would insist on it, just like the prong covering the point of a heart shape or pear. But if it doesn't add something practical to the piece like this there may be a tendency to leave it out. Mege says on his website something to the effect that his general design philosophy is to showcase the stones and deemphasize the structure of the piece - "a concept of presenting any metalwork only as a structure supporting gemstones and by itself meant to be invisible". Not surprising he would recommend against double prongs just for looks .Edit: just to make it clear, I like the look too , and am having a piece made now that has double prongs, without considering whether it would have been needed from a security standpoint.

Ah, the pave is so gorgeous! And I agree; that price seems really reasonable. Far from the sort of Beverly Hills prices I pictured him charging.

Elmo, You are correct! Leon stated that it was not necessary to have double prongs for security. I opted to have double prongs only for aesthetics. Reena, isn't Leon a pleasure to work with! My ring is going to be in the mid $3K range. It should be completed by the end of August .

Yes, Leon seems just great (although I haven't met with him in person yet because I haven't picked out a stone!!). I can't wait--and I just might insist on double claw prongs too! The main problem I'm having now is deciding what type of stone I want to put in the setting (the one posted above with the emerald set in it). A 2c square cushion cut (very antique-y looking), or a 2c Jubilee, Queen of Hearts or similar(more brilliant and modern looking). I'd just LOVE opinions . . . . ![]()
