looking at this diamond, and the guy said it got a lower color grade b/c it has a silver tint to it...I thought the color score went down b/c of yellow. He said it was pretty unusual. The clarity is VS2, so i am not worried about that, and i can tell it does have more of a silver look to it, kinda cool. Definetly want to put it in a platinum solitare setting. advice?

What is the color grade? I've seen Gs that looked more "silvery" vs. the icy white of a D or E, but Gs don't look "warm" or yellow to me...

Silver color can take away the shine in diamonds. Sometimes giving it a milky glow.
But I also have seen some nice silvery diamonds.

Is this an unmounted stone? What is the certification? I ask because a stone is either an H or an I. There's no such thing as an H-I. Sometimes stones are listed that way when mounted in a setting, since the setting doesn't allow a full view of the stone. But I would be cautious in this situation...

i looked at it in the sunlight, and was pretty impressed...i just don't want to feel like i am getting ripped off. The price on this diamond is lower than most of the other VS2s i was looking at, b/c of the color being H-I... it's a 1.2 ct H-I color, VS2 brillant round cut..for ~ $4,200

This is an unmounted stone. I asked about certification, and the guy said that they often don't have it in order to keep their prices down. Sounds shakey, i know, but this is the most trusted/longest running diamond/jewelry store in Nebraska. THey do have the ring appraised for insurance purposes when you take it, and so it is graded a second time by an independent source.

Well, I'm not an expert, but that price sounds too good to be true... and when it comes to diamonds, that makes me nervous. Can you make the sale contingent on verification by an independent appraiser? Or if you love the stone, ask them to submit it to GIA or AGS for certification and offer to pay the fee? That might be $200 well-spent that saves you from purchasing something that turns out to be a J SI2... I'm not saying that's the case, but for this kind of purchase I really believe that knowing exactly what you're getting is worth a nearly insignificant fraction of what you're spending on the diamond...Just my $.02.

You know, pqcollectibles diamond is a "J" color cut from a blueish hued rough. I would think that a diamond cut from a siver rough would be a GOOD thing!

Ask to see the diamond upside down & loose in a white tray.

Compare it against other H or I color diamonds.

Silver or Cape is a term for lower color diamonds that may show a tint of yellow.

There are also grey or 'silver' tinted diamonds.

Dobas,

It only cost approximately $118 plus shipping to have GIA certify my 1.37 round brilliant. It may be worth asking the jeweler to have this done and offer to pay for the cert if it is close to their assessment of it.

The only inconvenience is that it takes a few weeks. I had mine sent to GIA Carlsbad, CA. I think it is faster there than in NY. It may be worth your piece of mind.

Brian -
I did look at it in a white tray, and i really didn't see any yellow, espically when compared to other H-I stones, and even when compared to higher rated stones. It did look more "silver tinted" and i belive that is what the guy said,so is that a horrible thing?

Hi,

No, that in itself it not a bad thing.

But be aware, that if in a white tray the silver diamond is darker or has more body color than a true 'H' the silver stone is most likely NOT AN H and should be priced accordingly.

DobasD03,
it could be a diamond that is of the same type than blue diamonds.
these have a slightly different chemical composition than most diamonds.
if so, the silver color you are refering to is a gray nuance.
(this diamond type includes blue, grayish blue, bluish gray & gray)
this is quite rare but probably no premium for it.
you are asking if it is horrible but at the same time you said it looks cool.
beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...if you like it then it isn't horrible.
good luck .

I generally agree with that statement, but I also think it's worth ensuring you're not overpaying. While it may be "cool" as an H, would you think it was as cool (and as good of a deal) if it turns out to be a K or L? If the answer is yes, then great, go for it!

aditionally, a gray which is equivalent h-i color has an equivalent amount of color when comparing from profile but will almost always look 'whiter' than an h-i of the cape or yellow types when comparing in face-up position.
