I was just wondering if the stone is set a bit too high for the girl's taste, can it be lowered with ease, or is this a difficult process. I have attached a pic of the setting and diamond that I purchased. Its almost identical.

Hard to tell from that photo about your ring. Almost always, you would have to change crowns to reset a square diamond lower, which can be a complicated and costly job. Ask the vendor if they can redo it if the diamond is too high for your intended. I think there are many other full service jewelers like us that will provide this service (if selling the diamond and/or ring) in this type of situation. Of course, the time to ask this is before signing on the dotted line. Brian Knox |

there is a photo in "show me the ring" under "my improved setting- yay" of a setting that was lowered. It is a bit different to yours (it is like a x-prong), but demonstrates the before and after, and that it can be done effectively. You would just have to find an appropriate goldsmith/silversmith/platinumsmith/jeweller/ whatever you want to call them. cheers matt

---------------- That is a basket setting - the one in your picture is something different (called "peg" I think) and the job is not the same. Chances are that the head on a rong like that will need to be changed - but it does depend on what the ring looks like now to tell. As a general rule, basket settings are lower than pegs to begin with. Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." [Souren Melikian] |

Valeria, Good point. Presumably, the only change that would need to be made in this case would be to change the "peg head" to one with a lower profile. If so, it is probably more simple than changing the basket head, as the band etc would not need to be re-shaped? I know that wholesalers provide heaps of different "peg-head" styles for jewellers to mix and match with different band settings ( i can't remember the web-site, but I stumbled upon one once and was amazed). It would be a case of finding a head that suits you needs and style. cheers mm
