Ahhhh, treysar, so your friend thinks instead of focusing on a setting that makes her diamond LOOK bigger, maybe she should just get a diamond that IS bigger? What are the specs on your friend's current stone? Did she buy it from an online vendor? What is the trade up policy of her vendor? It is not obnoxious to want a larger stone. Some people just do and that doesn't make them bad people.

I don't think it's bitchy just b/c someone wants to upgrade a 2 ct stone! Well, for 2000 you might not get a bigger stone...but you could probably get a better cut stone with the same color and clarity....or maybe same cut but you could jump in color or clarity...probably not both...

There is a problem with the upgrade - how is she going to "get rid" of the current stone? Unless the same seller takes it in for an upgrade, it is unlikely that she will recuperate anything close to the price she paid The 2k will likely barely cover the loss! Assuming that this is a 5k diamond and she can get the sum back, the added expense will get a 1.5cts I-Si piece. IS that worth the trouble ? Actually, the description of the existing diamond sounds very good - this should be a particularly clean SI piece and the proportions sound promissing as well. I would not suspect this for H&A, but it can well be a piece with great brilliance nevertheless and quite a good buy (in absence of branding). Unless some of this is way optimistic, the idea to set this stone in a nicer setting rather than get a bigger, but not better diamond sounds very reasonable. Actually, I am already thinking of a pair of trillions or half moons to cover the remaining finger area on the sides of the stone It can't hurt that such stones are meant to look large for their weight to begin with...Just a thought, of course. I assumed she meant with the same jeweler who would give 100% upgrade value...what ever that's worth! I'm thinking though, it's not worth it. I would get a really nice setting!

Unless she can wrangle up more than 2k, she probably isn't going to end up w/ something substantially bigger, especially if the stone was purchased years ago. That said, for 2k, sides stones would give the center stone some real umpf. Curious, how long has see had the ring/stone. If she is newly engaged, I kinda think asking for more would be a little touchy. If she's been married for several years, an upgrade may be more well received. Either way, it depends on the guy. My husband was never attached to my orgininal stone. He didn't really care as long as what I did made me happy. Some men would be offended if the women wanted an upgrade. We haven't had a thread like this in a while. People had some pretty strong opinions either way in the past.
