I've made the decision to finally pop the question to my girlfriend, the problem is, I want to have a ring within a month or so, so that it can be a graduation present for her. She think I am getting her a promise ring for the present, and I think it would be the perfect time to suprise her.

She REALLY loves the Tiffany's Lucida Princess cut diamong rings, we look at it everytime we go into the store. She knows that I can not afford it though.

Can anyone give me some direction on where I could go to have a Lucida style setting made? I found the ones on D. Vatche's website, which are very close, but are there any that are perfect reproductions? I have a friend in the diamond business, so I dont believe Ill have any trouble getting what I need that as far as that goes, 1 carat...yada yada.

This is REALLY urgent for me, I need to get the ball rolling ASAP if I can have it done in time, please help me with anything you can!! Thank in advance!!

I think the Vatche X-Prong is about as close as you're gonna get to the Lucida setting. Some people have said that Vatche makes the Lucida settings for Tiffany's.

The Tiffany Lucida diamond isn't a princess cut. It's a cut designed and sold only by Tiffany's. There are several different modified square cut diamonds sold by several vendors listed here on Pricescope.

I may be the only person on PS that thinks Vatche does not make the Lucida settings for Tiffany. Not only have I not seen a statement from them saying they do or do not make the setting, but not even a statement declaring that they can't even discuss it. This makes me believe that they are keeping their mouth shut and enjoying the free publicity. Which is fine by me btw. I'm all for free PR. And I love the X-Prong.

As for the Lucida diamond cut, EP is right... the cut is propretary. The closest thing I've seen is the Lucere. Someone here posted wireframe diagrams of both and the only real difference was that the Tiffany was a 2-step crown and the Lucere is a 3-step crown. There are other very nice squares you can use instead such as Aschers, Princess, Dreams, Regents, Hope, Radiant, and of course the new buzz word this year, Jubilee.

Is this close to what you're looking for? It's a picture of Vertical Horizon's fiancee's ring. It's a platinum Vatche X-Prong with a Jubilee cut diamond. It's absolutely beautiful.

Just to play devil's advocate: A graduation gift (or Valentines or Christmas or New Years or Easter or birthday gift) is just that. An engagement is a whole separate thought and occasion and an engagement deserves its own special occasion/time/space.

In case the engagement doesn't work out (which doesn't sound like your case since you're doing all this research and you sound committed) a girl gets to keep a ring given to her on an occasion other than a special engagement day. (i.e. If it's given on her birthday or Christmas, she gets to keep it!)

Best of luck to both of you!

I hear DCraig's point. It's the opinion of a lot of people. But the person in question should know how well their relationship is going. There's little reason for them to think that the moment will be anything less than stellar if he combines two celebrations. The surprise factor may be just what he's looking for.

However, beware when you do it on a Birthday or other gift giving holiday. B/c after a while of being married, don't think you'll get off easy with 1-combo present. You're just gonna have to shell out more money in one shot, than spreading it out. Werd.

What do you mean by the non-branded version?

Vertical Horizion: Thanks for the input on the diamond cut, I am thinking of doing princess since she a nice set of princess cut diamond earings that I plan on upgrading for her for christmas, I think they would go well together.

EP6585: Yeah I really like the look of that, The angle gives a good look of the ring...If my girlfriend likes that setup, that is probably exactly what Ill go with. Now I have to figure out how to "test the water" without her knowing!

Thanks for the input on when to give it to her and everything. Like was said, the way out relationship worked out, her graduation and my graduation have special meaning to when we are going to marry. I think it will work out great!

Thanks for everyones input again!

ep6585, your ring is lovely. Nice choice.

GMCYA,

There are alot of vendors that sells mountings that look almost exactly like what your looking for (minus the brand name-DVATHCHE-TIFFANY'S ect..).
Also buy purchasing a beautiful princess diamond from a online vendor, you could save alot of money that way.

It's not my ring. It's Vertical Horizon's fiancee's ring.

I'm in the process of getting one similar to it.

Diamondsbybree: Could you give me some links or inform me of some online places that I would be able to buy one that looks very similar? My girlfriend wont care if its by D. Vatche or by someone else.

Also maybe a link or 2 of good diamond sellers online? I might end up going this weekend to take a look at some and would like to get some price estimates and so forth as to what kinda deal I might be getting. Again, sorry for being so "duh" about this stuff!

Here are a couple generic versions. Usually they'll be called x-prong, cross prong, or trellis settings.

Dirt Cheap Diamonds

Blue Nile

Ice Store

Check out the vendors page for a list of online vendors. I've worked with Good Old Gold and Whiteflash during my search. Both have been great to work with.

That's great-thanks for the info ep6585. Any idea on why the price varies so widely? $850 to $1500 (platinum) for what appears to be very similar settings. Do you know what the retail price of the famed D. Vatche X oribg setting is?

Whiteflash has prices listed on their website. They're about the same price as the other online vendors that carry Vatche.

WF Vatche X-Prong

GOG, NiceIce, Whiteflash, Superbcert, and several others sell Vatche.

Actually, the previous link to WF was going to the setting for rounds, but there is one in white gold for square diamonds (LINK) which you may find to be a good deal.

Princess cut diamonds would have quite various sizes for the same weight due to variations of their cut, so I find the equal pricing for rings made for anything between 0.75 and 1 carat stones helpful.

As a side note... it may be a stretch to say that a 3/4 and a 1 carat princess cut diamonds would have the same size, but extreme examples could be found among pieces with some questionable cut (too deep, or too shallow, with wide girdle and such)- but a smaller weight difference is easily made irrelevant by cut.

Just a thought, of course.

One cause for a difference in price (besides name brand) would be weight, which is sometimes not listed in the description. In order to properly compare similar looking plat. settings, you should ask the weight of each.

Thanks again everyone! This is a great forum, glad I found it!

I realllllllly like the prices of these settings, but cant stand the bar/weld or whatever going across the inside of the band. Do ya'll know if they are all like this from this company? Or where I might be able to find one near this price with a little cleaner presentation on the inside? This is from dirtcheapdiamonds.com ...

I've stared at that cross bar too. Here's what I concluded.

It's there for stability. There are other designers, like Veraggio, who have 4-prong settings (not similar) that seem to float the diamond in the prongs without a cross bar. They must be made differently. Their prongs must be like a 4-point tension setting, gripping the very girdle of the diamond, whereas trellis settings are often holding/hugging the diamond into it's setting.

I did not go with the x-prong, but my w-prong from WF has the little bar and it barely shows. I had hated that look when I first saw it, but the fact that the bar sits below the girdle you really don't notice it (at least with my setting). Also, Vatche is coming out with a new double x-prong that Ep6585 is considering which I think is GORGEOUS!!!

As for choosing your diamond, make sure you check out the cut chart at http://www.gemappraisers.com. Also, keep in mind that you will want your table smaller than the depth (I prefer 3-5% smaller), and a crown of at least 10% if you stick with a princess cut!

Good luck with your search!

As you can see by the supplied picture, the X-prong does have the bar. I bought it. I've stared at it. It's there.

The good news is that, and I've said this a bazillion times, your sense of perception is thrown after examining all these magified photos. The cross bar, the prongs, the inclusions, clearly don't look like the picture in real life! It will be hardly noticible.

In other words, don't sweat the small stuff. If you have any questions, contact the settng manufacturer in question, ask them where there is a local retailer and look at the setting in person.

Bar or no bar is just a matter of taste, but what isn't just that about an already well made ring ? Below are a couple if non-bar rings I know of

I'm actually not sure which bar he's referring to- I thought that he meant the bar that is underneath the X-prong in both the non-Vatche pics he supplied. In any case, I totally agree with you- we tend to obsess over these tiny details, once you have a gorgeous ring on your hand all of those teensy little details melt away.

Ohhhh... THAT's not a bar. Those are the bottom of the prongs crossing each other. The angle is bad.

If you look at the other examples, there is no bar on the INSIDE of the shank. The prongs cross from the shank and move upwards to hold the rock. It's a part of the ring itself and makes it more comfortable.

My bad.
