hi everyone. i recently had a H-VS2 loose diamond sent to an independent appraisal where it was appraised as a G-VS1. should i take this as a good sign that my stone is edging towards better grades or should i lose confidence in the appraiser?

Appraisals are just opinions- expert opinions, but still opinions. It is not an exact science, whether it is done by GIA, AGS, EGL or by an independent appriaser. From what I understand, a variation of 1 grade is not all that unusual- and when it is upwards, be happy. I had a stone which the independent appriaser thought GIA was too harsh on the clarity (he thought vvs2, GIA said VS1), but thought GIA was too lax on the colour (he though H, GIA though G). I sat through the process with him, and looked at the colour sones with my one for comparison, and agree with him on that. cheers matt

Hi, Who did the original grading? Was it done lose? What qualifications did your appraiser have and were they using a master diamond set or CZ's for color comparison? A lot of appraisers will use CZ sets because of the cost factor but they don't give a fair assesment in my opinion. Most appraisers/graders should be within one grade of each other. It sounds like the appraiser was a bit liberal, but on the other hand, what do you have to be worried over? The diamond did not grade any worse than you had been told. While it still may not truly be a higher grade than what you bought it for, the appraiser should not have created any concern on your part that you had a problem. If anything, you have cause to celebrate.... If the diamond was mounted, this can create estimation errors on color and clarity. If CZ master stones that have faded a bit were used, they can create color grading issues, too. CZ's can work fine, but one must have control diamonds of known grades to keep CZ master sets fully functional and adjusted on a weekly basis. David S. Atlas |

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm quite happy with the stone and am having it set. I guess I was just wondering if I should bring the finished ring back to the same person for the insurance appraisal considering that there was a 1-grade shift from the AGS certificate. In light of your comments, I feel reassured. Matt: Thanks! I'm glad to hear that a 1-grade shift is not uncommon. That's sort of what I expected, but I've heard some people say that they can spot 1-grade color differences and that made me curious. Cindy: The originial grading was by AGS and it was done loose. I found the appraiser on the PriceScope list and he was a pleasure to work with. He appraised the stone loose and compared it to a master diamond set. David: Thanks for the input! I think I will celebrate now that my diamond search is coming to a close!

Hi Dave, Who has the time to do a weekly check on their CZ masters? Or do they even have a certified master diamond set to test against? My point is that those appraisers out there relying solely on their CZ set could be setting themselves up for disaster at the consumers expense. I've tried numerous times to use the CZ sets and find it is very very difficult. I have looked at them all and find they are difficult to use. Just my 2 cents....Cindy Cindy Konney, GG, RJ, ICGA |
