Setting to maximize diamond on chubby fingers? |

I think I have found my diamond (what I thought was going to be the hardest part). Chris at D.Atlas assures me that it is the best heart shape he has ever seen and it scored a 1B on the AGA charts. Now I need a setting. Problem being, I have short chubby fingers (size 9) that look more like little sausages than elegant appendages to showcase my new 2ct sparkly ![]() I was thinking of a high 3mm cathedral setting to raise the stone off the chubbiest part of my finger, but the 3mm band practically disappeared on my finger! I don't know if I can go much thicker though without making the diamond appear smaller. Perhaps a tappered shank? Any idea would be appreciated! |

Congratulations on finding a well cut heart shape diamond! That is an exceptional achievement! About the only thing you can do to try and find a mounting that looks good on your hand is to run through the local jewelery stores and start trying rings on... We find that rings with a little movement in them tend to look better on shorter fingers, straight rings tend to make things look shorter... Todd L. Gray, President |

Ditto on NI.
![]() I have found that the classical solitaire with a baguette on each side maximizes the diamond's size really well. Maybe because it's because of the little extra glitter!

Yes, the best thing to do is start trying on rings. You'll never know what looks good until you try it one. Personally, considering that your heart-shaped diamond is 2ct, I would think that tapered bagettes on either side would compliment the centre stone. I also think that the bagettes would not "disappear" on your finger, as a plain metal band. Another thought would be to look at your current collection of rings. Which style compliments your fingers? Would it be possible to adapt that style to include the heart-shape? Here are some pictures that may inspire you: ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'm wondering if a setting that raises up high may focus attention on the stone alone. Just a thought. Also, my Vatche 3 stone has a shank that is very slimming to the fingers.

A wide setting gets my vote... regardless of whether the stone sits high or low. If you like intricate rings, than it is a blessing in disguise to be able to wear a larger size and give the jeweler space ![]() Regardless, I also think that it makes sense to keep a certain ratio between the width and the diameter of the ring. Technically, a larger ring will need a thicker band to keep it's shape (something easily overlooked in off-the-shelf rings): it would still work to have it 3mm wide - but that is very narrow indeed, as far as my ruller says. It doesn't sounds like your diamond needs to stand alone to catch the eye. Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." [Souren Melikian] |
