Rhodium Plate 14K White Gold Head - Yes or No??

I’m having my e-ring diamond mounted in a 14k yellow gold Tiffany-like setting. It will stack next to my 5mm wide plain gold w-band. I realize that a lot of you scoff at yellow gold, but I’m a redhead and the yellow gold is just a better compliment to my skin tone. At any rate, I do want the prongs to be white gold, but I don’t really want that gleaming, silvery rhodium plating on the prongs because I think it kind of “cheapens” (if you will) the overall look. I believe I can elect to leave the white gold prongs untreated – and the examples I’ve seen of this look very natural and seem to make an easier transition from the yellow gold shank to the white gold prongs. Also, I am hoping to add a white gold pave anniversary ring sometime soon, and would want that ring to be left untreated also. Opinions please?

I don't think anyone scoffs at it -- it's simply a matter of personal preference and skin tone, as you said. I don't know what skin tone I have, but most cosmetics look strange on me, as well as yellow gold (but rose gold and white metals look good). Right now white metals are fashionable, that's all. Yellow gold is also more durable than white gold (depending somewhat on the alloy), so you're better off there as well.

The usual advice is to get a platinum head with a yellow gold shank. That way you get the durability of platinum holding your stone.

I get the durability aspect of having a plat head, but I am so fond of the way the white gold (not plated with rhodium) has kind of a softer looking color/tone. Wouldn't a plat head start to look rather "grayish" after some wear and tear?

My ring is yellow gold with a platinum head and it does look greyish except when I take it in to the jeweler and have them polish/clean it, then it looks whiter again, but never as "soft" and warm looking as white gold. It makes more sense to get platinum for long term durability, but as long as you get your white gold prongs checked every six months or so by a jewler, I think you're fine with your preference.

That's all I wanted to hear! I am trying to educate myself here, but in this case my head says one thing and my heart says something else. Who doesn't want to admire every aspect of their ring when they look at it? I just don't want a platinum head to stick out like a sore thumb and bother me every time I glance at it, just to say it's more durable. I know that durability is a big part of the equation, but how much less durable is white 14k white gold?

I meant to say "Thank You" MichelleCarmen for your input. Off the subject, BTW, I noticed one of your old posts about finding a vacation spot. If you are still looking, or are ever looking, I have some excellent info about a place in Maui for you. Just let me know. I'm in Oregon and work in SEA sometimes - so geographically connected. Thanks again.

I just dropped my wedding ring off at my jeweler's today to get a new head put on it. My old head was very high and 6 prongs and I always wanted a lower, 4-prong head. I ended up going with a platinum head instead of white gold. My jeweler really recommended it for it's strength and so that I will not have to worry about it yellowing ever. I felt like my old head had yellowed but he said that I could just be seeing the yellow gold of my ring reflecting. (My wedding ring is yellow gold, 8 mms wide with pave diamonds.)

I am hoping that I like it since I usually don't care for platinum as much as white gold. But I figured that since it was just the head of the ring, it would be worth it to spend the extra $ and it should not show scratches too much.

I'm also having him put two 7 point "suprise" diamonds in the head since I had them sitting here.

I do think that a white gold head is probably just fine. Like Michelle said, if you have it checked regularly, you should have no problem. I really wasn't sure which to go with but like I said, I felt like my old head had yellowed and I didn't want that to happen again.

As for not having a pave band rhodium plated, that is up to you. My 12 stone anniversary-style ring is white gold and was not plated when I first picked it up. I took it back to be plated and I'm glad I did. The color was about half way between my yellow gold ring and my 18k white gold ring that was rhodium plated. I prefer a whiter look to my white, lol.

Well, thank you for your opinion. I stopped at a couple of jeweler's shops yesterday and today and asked the same question, so I got some direct advice - and very different vibes from all of them. I know my project right now is rather insignificant, but I'd like to find a jeweler who I can really connect with so I can develop a good working relationship for future (I hope!) projects. Finding the right jeweler seems just about as hard as finding a diamond/setting. I never knew this stuff could be so complex!

How many prongs are we talking about on your ring? Mine is four pronged and low set and the platinum doesn't stick out on my .42 sized stone. Six prong WILL look more metal like.

Thanks for the trip offer. Bad news, we had to cancel our trip for now, good news, I got a new car instead lol Husband says we're going to wait until fall to plan any vacation after we refinance our house Hawaii is still our goal!

I had a wedding band with yellow gold prongs--I know it sounds almost sacrilegious but those yellow prongs REALLY made the F color diamonds (30 pointers) POP. I had the ring changed to white gold and sadly, i regret it now. It lost its uniqueness and the gorgeous stones are a bit lost in comparision.

My fondness is for a four prong head, as I think it makes a round stone look kind of square - which I like. My diamond is just a wee bit over 1/2 carat (.59). I think now I'm pretty set on a white gold head and no rhodium plating. If I chose platinum, I would just make myself insane looking to see if it was turning grey all of the time.

Regarding Hawaii - if you do decide to go, I have some pics of a beautiful private condo where we stayed for a very reasonable sum, so let me know if you want to further investigate. Lots of rooms over there sound good, and turn out to be kind of trashy.
