forgot to ask on my last post. Does hard water have any effect on how soon and how dirty a diamond can get. When I clean my diamond it looks great but in no time at all when looking at it very closely it looks like there a ton of tiny pinpoints almost like it has become a magnet and is attracting tons of dust particles. has this happened to anyone else? thanx again for your help.

YES! This happens with my aquamarine. I have done 'tests' to see when this happens and it seems that if I clean my ring and dry it with my hairdryer then take it off when I wash my hands, it does not get the dust adhering to the stone. I believe it to be the lint from the towels and paper towels I use to dry my hands. If I leave it on when I wash my hands and dry them in my usual manner, then I get that dust build up. However, I clench the band between my teeth when I wash my hands. If I were forgetful I would rather have dust on my ring, than possibly put it down somewhere and forget it. I wish you well, Bridget Pterodactyls rule. Except for the whole being extinct thing. |

Run a search on cleaning diamonds here, lots of Q and A on methods as well. Diamonds attract dust and dirt like a MAGNET. I clean mine daily or else it bothers me because it gets what I think is a mix of hard-water and lotion film on the pavilion. What a pain but it sure does sparkle when it's clean.
Takes just a minute. ________________________________ |

me too! i clean mine everyday..i think its actually a problem! so my DF says. but i cant stand a dirty ring..to see some ladies beautiful stones all milky looking because they have so much...whatever on it! but to answer your question..i would think hard water may leave spots on your diamond if not dried properly, just as it would on dishes or your car. so after washing, just dry well with a soft towel, papertowel or hairdryer. i dont think there is anything you can do about the small dust particles..those will get on the diamond no matter how well you clean it..just as mara said..they are magnets.

OK. This is a guy speaking, and I don't wear diamonds, so pardon me if this does not work. Why don't you keep a bottle of alcohol, and dip the whole ring in it everyday? Since alcohol is colourless and evaporates very quickly, it should not leave any 'water marks'. I don't think diamonds, nor platinum, deteriorate when immersed in alcohol... am I right? ![]() |
