Hi,

I posted a couple of days ago a few diamonds that I had found on solomonbrothers.com. Well, I called them today and got some info on what sounds like a very pretty marquise. Here are the specs for it.

1.02 Carat
G Color
VVS1 Clarity
9.65x5.35
Table - 59%
Depth - 63.4%
Girdle - Slightly Thin to Thick
Cullet - None
Polish - Good
Symmetry - Good
Flourescence - None
GIA Certified

The price they were asking for this diamond was a little over 6,000, but I got them down to $5,500. The main thing I am curious about is whether or not these dimensions/Table/depth stats sound good. Does this sound like a reasonable price for this diamond? Any other comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

(sorry for th eprevious missplaced post )

It sounds like this could be E/F-VVS for the same money But the numbers sound good indeed.

It took a while to work it out

Here's what I meant: there seem to be better grades avialable such as tis F-IF and E-VS1 (this is a really slender one).

Would upgrading to a E/F make that much of a difference or would the table/depth numbers make more of a difference on a Marquise? I like Solomon Brothers, because they are an established company and have a full refund guaruntee, but I still want to get the best deal for my money. I need to make a final decision in the next day or two, because the big day is in less than 2 weeks.

Someone on here also gave me some links to a couple of marquise diamonds on goodoldgold.com. Is this place a reputible establishment and do they tend to negotiate on prices? Here are the two diamonds on goodoldgold: http://www.goodoldgold.com/marquise_1_11ct_d_vs2.htm

and

I am looking for any help on getting the best deal and security for my money. Thanks again.

Hmmmm, just a quick note on the first stone you posted, Jashmore. Make sure the girdle is faceted. Girdles tend to be thicker on fancy shapes, thus a faceted girdle is recommended, being a more attractive look. You can tell if the girdle is faceted from the lab report.
OK, here's a couple of very nice looking stones from a very reputable vendor --the price range is $5-6K:

Best of luck!

Thanks for the reply. The girdle is faceted.

One month ago I knew basically nothing about diamonds, but now I am starting to feel like a know a lot more than I even want to

If I do decide to go ahead and go with this diamond from solomonbrothers, is $5500 a good price or should I try to get them to go even lower? Thanks.

You can try

As for the sellers cited on this thread... theyr are obviously well known and trusted here due to frequent purchases getting commens here. So... it is likely that PS posters woudl feel more confortable with DCD, WF and GOG just as you are with your jeweler. All these shops have return policies - ths is rather the norm although the details are not teh same everywhere. As for price negotiation, it is part of PS "folklore" that a good seller does not do it but rather put forward the best price. To me, this means little - since it seems that most shops will leave some margin of negotiation - as you could experience first hand.

There are not to many G-VVS1 pieces around, but if you do find one with an even better price you could use the listing as argument for negotiation.

As for the table and depth % - those would not be enough to guarantee brilliance, as you already know. So there is litte to say about what stone looks better based on those alone There isn't much of an alternative to comparing fancy cuts side by side, but some standard test / measure would help (such as the Iscope or the Gem Adviser that GOG uses).

Just my 0.2, of course.
