As most of you know, my (beautiful!) stone is finally bought and set (YAY!) but some recent threads have gotten me curious about diameter widths. Is there a "standard" (or usual - or recommended?) diameter width for various carat weight stones? I'm sure there is probably some lee-way, or an acceptable "range"... but I don't recall ever really seeing too much about that before I bought my stone. (I am particularly interested in round brilliants, of course but any general info on other shapes would be interesting to know, too!)Thanks! Lynn And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it! |

The diameter of a well cut round brilliant should be about [(Carat weight)^(1/3)]*6.50mm. For other shapes it should be about [(Carat weight)^(1/3)]*x, where x is the appropriate measure of a well cut 1.00ct diamond of the same shape. Enjoy your diamond. D Riley |

I'm a bit confused. What does the "^" mean? Can you calculate the diameter of a well cut .81 round brilliant.

The "^" indicates exponentiation. In words, the diameter of a well cut round brilliant should be about 6.50mm times the cube root of the carat weight. In the case of a 0.81ct stone, this would be about 6.06mm. D Riley |

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought that it indicated an exponent, but just wanted to be sure. It's good to know that I remember something from high school algebra

Here's a link someone else posted in an earlier thread if you don't want to do the math and want a rough idea: Diameter table

Thanks, everyone for the info. The MATH is a little above me (has never been my strongest suit!) but the link Magnum supplied was very easy! THANKS!Lynn And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it! |
