I'm looking for some information on titanium tension settings for a man's ring. I'm going to mount a sizeable diamond in a titanium tension setting. Has anyone worked with any vendors that have had pleasant experiences? What vendors were they? Do I send the stone to them and have them do the mounting or buy the setting and have my own jeweler do the mounting? Can these vendors be trusted with a stone for a period of 3-4 weeks with my stone? Should I go with the regular titanium setting or the aircraft strength setting? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi Sfanta, Normally the tension set manufacturer will set the stone themselves. They have each independently come up with their own special tooling and procedures required to set them properly. Most jewelers will not have experience working with titanium or tension sets in general since the manufacturers work on them themselves. This is true of precious metal tension sets as well. Some have (much) longer turnaround time than others. For the issue of trust, many diamonds are laser inscribed on the girdle and can be identified on the completed ring after it is made, or the diamond can be mapped by your local jeweler before sending it off. A reputable manufacturer would have a lot more to lose by swapping diamonds and risk damage to their hard earned reputation than could be gained by doing so. I think that nearly all tension sets are made from aircraft grade titanium. It is much stronger than commercially pure, also called Ti999, and there is no down side to doing so. For a sizable diamond, make sure the design can accomodate it. Symmetrical rings would have to be extremely thick to hold it thereby becoming uncomfortable. One with an offset can keep the metal between the fingers down while still holding a large stone. Bruce Boone |

My now-husband has a titanium tension set ring with a .38c diamond in it. We bought the ACA diamond from WhiteFlash and had it shipped over. We originally used Absolute Titanium who did an excellent job for a custom setting of titanium witha thin gold band in the middle, but the ring was way too big...whose fault not sure. They took about 3-4 weeks to make the original ring and I trusted them with it because a poster on Pscope had recommended them. And honestly, I don't expect a company to run off with a diamond like ours, it wouldn't be worth it. ;0
Since the ring was way too big to wear and we only had 2 weeks til wedding-time, Bruce at Boone Rings came to the rescue and assisted us with the creation of essentially the same ring (with a few tiny but noticeable improvements) and this one blessedly fit! The turnaround was less than 2 days...I shipped my diamond out on Wed morning, he got it Thursday and shipped out the finished ring for Friday AM delivery. Honestly, it was unbelievable. He was very prompt with phone and email correspondence to let me know status updates. He really saved the day and we would not hesitate to use him again in the future.
As for regular vs aircraft..seemingly many companies prefer aircraft...I don't think there's a real difference for consumer use, it may just be whichever tickles your fancy.
