Square Emerald Cut, how hard are they to find? |

It's me again -- earlier topic was "Help my jeweler chipped my diamond". Now I'm feeling angry and frustrated. I am 10 days away from my wedding date and the jeweler has only produced two diamonds which I do not like and they are saying that they are having a hard time finding more for me to look at. Can anyone here tell me how difficult it is to find a stone that meets the following criteria: square emerald cut, 1.7 - 1.8 carat range, F, VS1 or better quality that measures 6.8mm x 6.6mm (so hopefully they do not have to cast yet another ring)? I don't want to be unreasonable if it really is difficult to match a stone to that criteria, but on the other hand if it isn't that difficult....then I have a different issue on my hands. Any feedback is appreciated. |

I don't know the answer, but I just did a search on the PS engine for E-G, VS1-VS2, emerald cuts with certs, and no square stones showed up. (For comparison -- every round search I do comes up with 20 pages of stones -- 20 pages must be the PS limit. This search came up with 2.5 pages of rectangular stones that met that criteria.) This leads me to believe that they might be telling you the truth.

I think you need to be searching for an "asscher", as when unbranded, the asscher is called a square emerald cut by GIA. When I searched with your specs with asscher, I came up with 3 different stones (offered by several vendors), ranging from $11K-22K. I think your jeweler is right in saying there are not many available, as the asscher is extremely popular right now.

I'm guessing that if the rough is symmetrically shaped so that a near perfectly square emerald COULD be cut from it, it is cut into a shape that is more saleable. An asscher knockoff might be one such shape which returns a higher $$/ct than a standard emerald with a L/W of 1.00. I would be interested to hear from a cutter which shape roughs lend themselves to which shape cut stones. I suppose having the eye for this is a real talent indeed, and mistakes which take away weight (or ends up with undesirable proportions or shape) can cost the cutter big $$.

the simple answer is yes, they are difficult to find, and finding one that is 1.7 to 1.8cts is particularly difficult. 1.5 is easier, as is 2.0. also, a square emerald cut is not an asscher, not even a generic asscher. they are distinctly different. i sell them with some frequency, but you do have to be alittle flexible. it may take a while for your jeweler to find something that works for you. i understand that you may not be happy about the answer to your question...but your jeweler is being honest with you. try to be patient...though clearly the clock is against you.

GIA has separate diagrams for square emerald and asscher cuts, the square emerald cut diagram having fewer steps, smaller cut corners and a larger table.

To match the size an weight you are listed, you'd need a stone about 65% deep - very nice but none is listed! Would you consider sending inquiries to different sellers for the little thing? Maybe making it E/G - VS1/VS2 to allow option?  Besides, almost any setting would allow for a little adjustment to receive a slightly different stone. And here are two stones... approx 6.8mm square EC, G-VVS2 and ~ 6.9 mm square EC F-VS2. Of course the stats do not offer the complete description of the stones, but pictures could follow, I would think. There seems to be a rather wide selection of such pieces listed by Blue Nile, and their "Signature Collection" seems to contain promissing pieces.
