Hello. Been (mostly) lurking for about two months... thanks to this site, I was thrown out of a shop on Union Square 'cause some punk was trying to tell me *all* his (GIA and EGL without Sarin #s) diamonds are ideal cut... hrmph. Seriously, you guys have been insanely helpful. Can I get opinions on the following? 2.074 carat RB AGS cert G VVS 2 pol / sym: ideal/ideal depth 60.6% table 56% crown angle 33.7 pavilion angle 41.0 culet pointed HCA 1 : ex/ex/vg/vg It's a bit more than I wanted in the clarity. I guess I should ask what people think a fair price and what the price premium over a VS2 with otherwise similar specs would be? Also, is the 'vg' rather than 'ex' for scintillation a concern? The only similar stone (AGS G / VVS2 / ideal) I could find online is at Blue Nile-- and they want about $2,000 more than I can get this one for. ...but if I drop to VS2, I think I can find one about $2,000 cheaper than this one. Thanks, f_p |

You didn't list a price, so it's tough to tell how it compares to these, but here are three really nice 2 carat G VS2 stones, two with H&A, and the third AGS0 and nice optical symmetry, but not H&A. Personally i think the first one has the best optics (slightly better than the third), but the middle one is also a great stone and a little less expensive: Goodoldgold 2.01 G VS2 AGS0 H&A $21,873 Goodoldgold 2.01 G VS2 AGS0 $19,900 Goodoldgold 2.08 G VS2 AGS0 H&A $22,023

This looks like a great stone. You didn't mention the price, but you can get comps by doing a search for similar stones on the PS engine on the home page. I found when I was shopping for a VS2, they could tell me a per carat cost for each clarity grade. It was in the range of $1-$2K/carat per grade if I remember correctly. Don't use my numbers -- I could be off significantly, but it is a valid question to ask. It made me realize that it paid to stick to VS2 and not bump up, even tho it was tempting.

I've got him down to $23,850... plus about $100 for a temporary Tiffany-style setting (I'm planning on letting her design her own after she gets the ring). I saw the stones at GOG and agree that they're quite nice-- I guess I'm trying to decide between the one I mentioned, one of those at GOG, and perhaps an ACA from Whiteflash. The problem is that they don't have any in the 2 carat, G group (though I have my eye on the 2.3, H). I ran across the I, VS2 2 and 2.5 carat ones... I know it shouldn't, but I think the I color makes me nervous. Thanks for your input-- any further advice would be appreciated. f_p

---------------- If you've been shopping around and looking at Ideal cut diamonds, you probably already know your personal color preference/comfort zone. Don't worry about being nervous with a particular color diamond. You have to be physically and mentally happy with your selection. Clarity costs more than color. In a 2 carat size diamond, depending on the grade defining inclusions, you would probably be safe for an eye clean diamond in the VS range. The price difference between VVS and VS will help you maximize the bang for you buck on the purchase. Why use a big word when a diminutive word would be succinct! |
