I was in a Scottish City Glasgow yesterday and noticed that two jewellers there are now taking in better diamonds, one had in their window H VVS was their minimum and stated that quality was the way to go.

In the other jeweller which was www.lewisgrant.co.uk I was astounded to find lots of D VVS1 and 2 diamonds and their prices were low, they said they travelled the world and cut out the middle man.

I saw a D VVS1 for £500 about $1000 but am not sure of the size certainly under 0.5 carats. There were lots of big diamonds too and a D VVS1 was £6000. I think this one was 1 carat.

I might e-mail them and see what the cut is like but it looked very sparkly with white and colour flashes.

It's 11 years since I moved from ol' blighty so I can not guide you as to if these prices are fair but I am surprised that the focus is clarity. After going thru a very exhaustitive B&M and online search I foundit hard to pay for something I could not see! I would never want anything that is not eye-clean but VVS sounds like overkill. H and G color represent some good buys but unless you are going for purity/rarity VVS is overkill.

The most important C to me is Cut. An ideal cut faces up whiter and sparkles like crazy. You need a lot more data from the jeweler to determine cut.

Have you thought about setting up appointments with New York jewelers, such as GoodOldGold, jetting in, reviewing and buying a diamond? Even after duty and plane tix you should end up with a better deal and bigger rock for your total outlay.
