Hello, I am seeing a dark spot in the "bottom" of a princess diamond I am looking to buy when viewing it in good light, that is NOT an inclusion. The table and depth are 71/77, 7% crown, 60% pav, perfect square. I have looked at far more expensive princess and have seen a similar effect. What is it that I am seeing? Is it normal for a princess? A function of the cut quality? Lighting phenomenon? Am I comparing it to other similarly cut princesses? I would appreciate very specific feedback if anyone has any experience or knowledge about this. Thanks! |

As far as I know the dark spot you're seeing is due to the depth being so large. If you check out the AGA charts http://www.gemappraisers.com/ you'll see that you really don't want to go any deeper than 75%. Some people will argue this point, but I personally would not go for a depth higher than 75%. The only other thing the dark spot might be (if it's not in the exact center of the stone) is what leads to scintillation (sorry, not an expert so I'm unsure of the specific terms). If you look at sites that show ideal scope images (or search for them on PS--I've posted mine) you will see the "dark spots" in the images. These are good, unlike the black spot centered in the middle of the stone. Hope this helps!

Thanke for the reply. I mistyped the specs, it's actually 71 depth, 77 table. Any other information on the appearance of a dark region?
