GIA cert. 1.01 ct EVS1 5.42 x 5.37 x 4.17 polish - good symm - fair table - 67% depth - 77.7% What do you think? They're selling it to me for $6000 on a platinum cathedral setting. Give me your opinions. Also, there was another that was GIA, 1.03, EVS2, 5.1 x 4.95 x 4.1, polish good, symm good, depth - 88.8% all for $5100. The depth makes me think that this is a terrible cut? Please give me opinions on each and if the price is worth it. THANKS!

Have you seen the first diamond? I am just wondering how it looks to your eye. I would be wary of any diamond whose symmetry is rated 'fair'. It's got lots of problems. I also don't like the depth of either, the second one being unbelievably bad. You don't make mention of the girdle descriptions. These are very important on a princess. I would avoid anything less than medium.

that is deep. My original e-ring had a 78 depth ....What did I know? .... .wasn't HORRIBLE....but was pretty dead and lifeless. Pass on the stone...It's going to look tenny tiny for its carat weight also and probably dark in the middle...Yeah, what's with the fair symmetry...Also, the second stone has 88.8 depth??? OMG...that is just dreadful. WHO is trying to sell you these stones....?....do yourself a huge favor and find a vendor who sells some nice princess stones...those are woofers...sorry

you are in Yonkers???? Queens here. Do yourself a HUGE favor and look at goodoldgold.com (Long Island and online)... ESPECIALLY since you're in NY.... I just bought my newest pretty this saturday...  hehehehe:http://www.goodoldgold.com/princess_2_10ct_f_si1.htm I should really be on the payroll! .... I didn't see what I wanted on their site...I asked Jonathan about a few...he was able to sort out the woofers by dialogue with the suppliers...saved me time and money...I think you'll find that no price scope vendor would offer you those princess stones

Neither is a fine cut... and the prices are not great either - I would expect these at below 5k even if no discount on loose cut quality is in place. This leaves plenty of space for the setting - and 1k for a simple platinum setting sounds right. Either GOG or not, there are plenty of stones like this on offer. I woudl understand such a purchase if cost woudl be the main concern, but given the quotes... it is not. If the stones are the right size for you, this can easily be achieved under 1ct with a better cut too. However, E color does not sound like "bargain hunting" so why should the cut be? Anyway... it is sort of "PS tradition" to line up pieces for comment, and there are a couple of fine princess cuts with such specs you might find interesting. Here goes One carat, E-VS1, $4700 (Iscope and Sarin includedd) 1.21cts F-VS1, $5700 and 1.05 F-VS1 $5600 The stones with light return tests (Ideal Scope at least) have clearly been selected not only for their proportions but also brilliance. The stone at GOG has really been put through its paces in this regard! It may not be very clear why the trade favors some cut proportions over others (you may find part of the explanation in the "Fancy Cuts" tutorial here...), but clearly cut influences the prce as well as the look of the stones. There are a few more or less loose standards on what proportions are more "desirable" for a princess cut (and thus commend a premium), but the AGA charts (LINK) make the only freely accessible overview of all probable sets of proportions (otherwise, one would just hear that 70-70 or 65-65 is "best" with no way to actually evaluate a stone. Obviously, the cut is never spot on that numbers, so a more complete range as AGA's makes a better tool, as far as I understand these...). Hey- is that second stone a typo???? I'm surprised you'd list it.... 76 table???

---------------- No... why would it  It does not obey the "table less than depth" rule of thumb but given some crown height it could be a rather brilliant stone - the proportions definitely do not spell "disaster" to me... It was not enlisted for it's optincs, but this is no "fair" cut either. Some say that larger tables make these look larger (not very sure what is that all about, but why not ), and the stone is larger anyway (the weight and depth make it so).
