Hi All, I am buying a diamond engagement ring for my GF and need some help. I am not very well knowledgable about the diamond business but I have done a fair amount of research and have decided that I will go with a local diamond jewellwer that has been in the area for 30 years and my parents have done lots of business with. Too me the diamond is beutiful It is on the higher end of my price range but the Jeweller tells me that he is giving me a really good deal on the diamond because he is is really good friends with my Parents (which is true!). I looked online and ite seems that he is giving me a decent deal, however getting a really good deal always makes me think something is going on, hence I would like some other people's opinion! Shape Round Brilliant Measurements 7.52-7.57x 4.56 Weight 1.57 Depth 60.4% Table 58% Girdle Medium to Slightly Think, Faceted Cutlet, None Polish Good Symmetry Very Good Clairty SI2 Color G Flourance None Comments: Additioanl Clouds are not shown. There is a clound on one of the sides that I could make out, however when it is in a setting it cannot be seen. Too me the diamond looks great, but I don't know much about these diamonds, The Jeweller told me that this is NOT an ideal cut diamond but rather a Premium. What do you all think? Also, the price is 6,200 + setting. thanks! |

Witht the use of the word "Premium", I get the uneasy feeling you are not looking at a diamond graded by GIA or AGS labs. Then you must question "Is it a true G and/or Is it a true SI2" If the answer is the grading document is not from GIA or AGS, then the possibility increases that the color or clarity (or both) could be liberally graded. Then, how can anyone judge the price of this stone against the market value of a diamond graded correctly? Tell us more.... David S. Atlas |

Sorry, The diamond has a 'Diamond Grading Report' with it which is issued by GIA (Gem Trade Laboratory), I have a copy of it with me. The conversation about Ideal vs Premium cut came up because I had told him that I was interested in an Ideal cut diamond when I went to look for stones, however this was the stone that caught my eye and he mentioned that it did not fall withen the guidelines of an Ideal cut, rather it was a Premium cut diamond. --ak

Does it have an actual GIA cert? Or is the cert by Gem Trade Laboratory? The two are not one and the same.

Well, it has a document with it that says GIA at the top with the GIA symbol to its left, under the words GIA there is a statement that says GEM TRADE LABORATORY, there is a GIA report number listed, details which I Posted earlier, two diagrams a hologram on the bottom right. The copyright on the document says gemological institute of america inc. I think what the jeweler might have meant was that even though it didn't fall within the AGS definition of ideal cut (hence the 58% table), the jeweler still felt it was a very well cut diamond and therefore to him it is a premium cut. I actually think it's encouraging that he was honest and said it wasn't an ideal cut diamond, when I'm sure many jewelers wouldn't hesitate to call a 60.4% depth and 58% table diamond ideal (in their opinion). Is there any chance he might know the crown and pavilion angles on the diamond? That information would make it easier to evaluate the cut of the diamond. Bottom line, if it looks beautiful to you and you trust the jeweler, it sounds like a good deal to me. A diamond doesn't have to fall exactly in the AGS definition of ideal cut to be beautiful. best of luck in your search.
