I am in the process of purchasing a diamond.

It is .77 E VVS1 vacuum sealed diamond with HRD certifcate and laser inscription. I was unable to verify the laser inscription until after placing the deposit and also had it sent away for personalise laser incription.

When i came to inspec the personalise inscription. i learned that there is a second laser inscription on the diamond as well. The certificate only state that it has one HRD laser inscription. It does not mention the existance of the other laser incription.

I sent an email to HRD asking for advice and they confirm that the current certificate is correct identification of the diamond. The other number was the previous certificate of the same stone.

No explaination was given to why was the old laser inscription was not mention on the later newer certificate.

Has any one came accross this situation?
Shouldn't the first laser incription be mention on the later newer certificate.
Should i proceed whith this purchase?

Best regards.
Tony

It is indeed unusual. So are you 100% sure that the stone is the same? If it's so, we must remember that diamond graders are humans... Maybe there was a misprint on the report?? It's very unusual, but it can happen. Have you thought about resending the stone to HRD to get an updated cert mentioning both inscriptions?

It is not uncommon for diamonds to be resubmitted to Grading Labs for any number of reasons. Maybe the diamond had a Cert the Vendor felt was a bit "old" and wanted a more recent date on the Cert. There any number of other reasons for a diamond to be resubmitted to a Grading Lab.

Why use a big word when a diminutive word would be succinct!

I have asked why was the new certificate don't have all the information. If the stone needs to have a new updated certificate i do not think it is my responsibility to chase it up or pay for it. I have not finialise the purchase yet.

It would appear that you are not happy with the situation. Finalizing the sale will not make you any happier.

This is supposed to be a joyous event and you are spending good money on your stone. Might I suggest that you should not talk yourself into something that already bothers you.

If you like the vendor, have him select another stone for you. If you are not happy with the way you are being taken care of, then find another vendor.

Quite frankly, for an E-VVS stone I would want either GIA or AGS certification. The price difference for one grade at that level is too high to entrust to a secondary laboratory, especially if you should ever want to trade up or other wise sell your stone in this market where HRD is not well accepted.

I am fairly new here, but I can tell you that if you do a search on diamonds and certificates her on PriceScope you will find a wealth of information and opinions. Good luck with your dilemna.

HRD is very good, and very strict for color.
If the certificate is "old", for example 2001-2002, the second inscription was probably made after.
A new certificate costs more than having a stone seiled again.
That could be the explanation, I think.
What is the second inscription about?
Can you give us more details of the certificate?

HRD E color will often obtain a D color at the GIA, so...

Hi Stephan.

How do you know which laser inscription is the latest? Is the first four digit of the laser inscription depict the year?

If this is true then of the two laser inscription one starts with 2003 and the second one starts with 2004. The 2004 matched the current certificate. Otherwise i do not know how to tell when the other certificate was done.

I'm not expert for HRD laser inscriptions, but I think that's the right diamond, because it was sealed.
Before purchasing it, you could give us the details of the certificate, to see if it's a nice one.

Those can be erased too...

Given the high color and clarity this does not surprise me that the stone has been re-certified...

There mustn't be too many such scribbled diamonds out there, so it only sounds reasonable that if "inscription on girdle" was mentioned on the cert, someone would have just treated this as a qualitative judgment instead of deciding to note that whatever was written was done in 'stages'.

One can order such inscriptions to be made (including internal ones and little love notes, for what that matters) - so counting the words on the girdle may not come as an obvious option...

Problem Solved.

After 4 days of enquiries to HRD. They have agreed to "Re-issue" the certificate. The re-issue certificate will mention both number and also stating which is the latest one.

It was HRD mistake not to mention the earlier laser incsiption.

I am relieved. for a momnent i was really worried.

Best Regards to all.

bye all
