I've been reading a lot of posts recently, especiallt those about new/fancy cut gemstones (like the 88, hearts and arrows, etc).

I'm a Computer Science MS student, and was wondering if anyone knows of computer software that can simulate diamonds of certain cuts under different lighting conditions. It could be used to explore new cuts, or even automated to generate cuts that are as brilliant, but might be easier to produce.

We use the Diam Calc Software for this purpose but you would have to work with Sergey to expand it's capabilities to things like the 88 facet stone, etc.

More is possible though, and this does not seem to be the only tool available to 'design' gem cut diamgrams with different goals in mind (color, brilliance, spread, shape, time of execution..., type of rough - and who knows what else might come into play ).

You might want to check this (LINK) thread for Garry's (aca "Cut Nut") comments on where this kind of diamond design might be going.

Check the site of the software maker (LINK)

and look for whatever software is used for gem cut design (Example).

PS: while marginally interested in this storry, I suspect you will have a serious sample of tools to survey, 'cause such software has been around for a while. You might want to read through THIS article and the like for an overview...
