Please discuss--do you take your diamond (s) with you on vacation? I am so afraid I'm going to lose it but I don't think I can be without it for 9 days. I remember once going to a resort and there was a magician at a party. He was talking to my husband and within a couple of minutes pulled my husband's wristwatch(it was on his wrist) out of his (the magician's) pocket!
My daughter and I are going on a spur of the moment cruise--I know there will be a safe on board--maybe I just won't wear it when I go to a port. But--do I wear it in the pool, etc. ? I'm curious what other's do.
I'm happy I'm Shappy

I feel ok in certain vacation places but in others - No way!
A cruise...hmmm. I do not like to use hotel (boat) safes and tend to travel with just the jewlery that I can wear all the time without removing during the trip. Hopefully, your insurance will cover you but the hotel does not insure your items in their safes. Often you have to sign a waiver to that effect.

It might help you decide by reviewing your insurance contract and reading the fine print about the places and situations in whihc you will be covered and to what extent.

Since I have idependant international insurance, it is not the hotel safe itself that bothers me. The idea of taking things on and off in an unfamiliar place seems to me to increase the chances of loss or theft (more loss). We have all had the panic attack just doing dishes! Imagine you are in Argentina or something (just, far away)! The safe did not get broken into but you can't remember where you took it off - did you put it in the safe, were you on your way there, did the maid take it? Bad thoughts plaque the mind.

Also, Is the safe in your room or in the lobby - how much availablity do you have to it, how secure is it - attached to the wall, detached?, etc. Sometimes the hotel safe can make it more unsafe! Food for thought - since there is no definitive answer.
In the end, I find it safer to leave the rocks in the bank if I cannot wear them all the time in the place to which I am travelling. I am still undecided about the swimming issue! It has not come up much since I prefer colder places... but it will!

Ha....I went through the same thing shortly after I got my ring.  I took a 4-day break to Florida with my MOH, and I wrestled with whether or not to wear my ring.

In the end, I decided that's what my insurance is for, and I wore it.  No problems, and I'm glad I didn't leave it home.  Wearing it on my honeymoon, too.

My wife only wears a plain band when we are on Vacation.

You’re just asking for trouble , when you take it with you.

Nobody really cares what you have. If anything they wonder what you really wear that you left at home ?

It’s how you want to play the game. I guess I’m just getting old and don’t really care about what people think or try to impress them.

This is just my 2 cents we all have different thoughts on what is right and wrong.

I would take it with me and enjoy it! I would also probably keep it on my finger at all times, if possible. With all the time and care spent picking out these beauties, it would be a shame not to bring it on vacation...unless, of course, you're going jet-skiing or mountain climbing!!

Have a great trip!

I usually just take what I will wear most of the time when I travel, but it depends on where I am going and what I am doing. Occasionally I take extra pieces if we will do a lot of dressing up. I always worry about it and never feel completely safe. If I was going somewhere with more risk, I would leave everything at home and just wear my wedding band.

I never swim with my rings on. I never wear them where they will be gone for good if they come off or loose, or when I am doing atheletic things as my fingers swell and shrink, and the rings become a bother.

I would leave your ring home IF you think you're going to go in the pool frequently or do other activities where there's risk of losing your it. Maybe just wear a wedding band or other simple ring.

Our last trip, I wore just three pieces that could be kept on all the time (except sleeping) so there was no concern with leaving anything in our hotel safe and having it stolen. We didn't do anything that could risk harming my diamonds, so it wasn't that big of a worry.

We are veteran cruisers. I take any jewelry I want to wear. I wear my rings in the pool & anywhere on the boat. I do have a guard band though. If we go on an excursion & my rings are either going to be in the way or I'm concerned about the port, I put them in the safe in the room. Never had a problem. In fact, just after I received my anniv. ring we went on a cruise. I called my insurance agent to make sure it was covered. He told me if I got mad at my husband & threw it in the ocean, it would be covered - and I don't think he was kidding.

You bought it for *your* enjoyment. Enjoy it!

If i had your ring, I'd be more tempted to throw my husband overboard and KEEP the ring! lol (ah, I hope my husband isn't stalking me and secretly reading my posts here or I'll be in big trouble )

Depends on where I'm going. If I'm going to a place I'm really familiar with--and where I'm going to dress up enough to warrant the extra sparkle--I'll take my rings. Usually, though, I stick them in the safe deposit box. I never take them to anyplace tropical or rugged where I'll be swimming or hiking (why bother?). I never take them to anyplace where I need my passport (except for Canada). No amount of insurance is going to replace the sentimental value of my rings.

I definitely wear my ring on vacation...it would really upset me to leave it at home. I don't even like leaving it at home for the gym..so I wear it!

But for earrings and other things, no I don't take those...unless I can wear them daily like the ring. Otherwise I would worry too much. Also it depends on where. The cottages in Hawaii we go to have safe's but the cottages are easily broken into really. However, if its a big hotel...and the room safe is secure, it would make me feel more confident. But my stuff is insured anyway so I figure...wear it and don't worry about what could happen!

I actually have an appt with our appraiser next week for our two new wedding rings and my new e-ring stone, so I can ensure that everything is insured before  we leave on our trips!

My ring is staying home. I hate the thought of leaving my ring at home but I hate the thought of losing it even more.

We got married in Feb but the honeymoon is in May. We are going to Puerto Vallarta for 9 days and I anticipate we will be in the ocean or pool most of the trip. If I was going somplace where I wouldn't be in water, I would consider taking it with me.

That's pretty much my MO too. If we are traveling to see family or attend a wedding (been to several in the past year) then I take my e-ring and some nice earrings. I would not travel to Europe or Latin America with a large diamond on my finger -- I am not interested in looking like a target. We are talking about going to Costa Rica or Hawaii for our honeymoon, so I probably will leave my e-ring at home (which will feel odd on our honeymoon ) and just wear the plain wedding band, since I know we will be swimming and hiking a lot.

Well, it's a toss up. A ring IS bought to be worn. And it's not the BLING that you want to wear as much as the sentiment of the ring to be on always. BUT you don't want it lost forever...If you replace the ring, do you replace the LOVE? If it's an heirloom, that's a different story, I think.

There is a permanance to it, that I love. I sleep with mine on, so does my friend. I use a toothbrush to clean it every morning and even wash it everytime I wash my hands!

Would you want to leave that behind?! Not me! I have a little leather travel case where I keep my good jewelery with my cheaper stuff (beads and CZ stuff) I always try to get a safe in the room, and I was froced to take my ring off when we went snorkling on our engagement vacation, because it was "too dangerous". I hated it.

I like the pride of wearing what my man worked so hard to save for and find. It's my way of saying Thank you so much I love it, and I love you, and everyone can see it! Also, insurance goes a long way...

There are 2 places that my diamonds don't get to come on. #1 is Mexico. We do alot of travel down in Ensenada/Punta Banda area and we drive down a few times being stopped and car searched by the Federales, so I chose not to wear the huge expensive items down there. I have a nice silver band that I wear instead. #2 is the River ie- Lake Havasu because I know too many people, friends and former customer of mine from the jewerly selling days that have lost their rings there as well, so I chose to go with the silver band for that trip too. One customer I had just bought a brand new 5.2 ct RB, had it on for only 2 days and PLOP to the bottom of the lake. I know they can be replaced with insurance money, but there are just some activities I think your diamonds should not be privy too.

Well I really want to bring it. The cruise (Celebrity) has safes in each room. We've always left money in them with no problem. Has anybody ever had a problem with an in-room safe?

I can't wear my ring to work, can't wear it to clean or garden at home--I really would like to wear it on the ship, esp. when dressing up for dinner, I love looking at it.

I would leave it in the safe when I went to port. Still deciding. . .

I'm happy I'm Shappy

Yeah, this issue tends to split people's opinions. I agree with Iceman here and wear a simple gold band or a small CZ ring I have from years ago. The rest is home in the bank. I always do a lot of swimming and stuff and just don't want to be bothered worrying about it. My peace of mind is more important to me than what some stranger thinks....and even the enjoyment of wearing the ring. Plus, once I REALLY scratched--I mean it was indented and has to be fixed-- my platinum 7 stone band trecking through the airpot. I was p*ssed!
