Impossible? Of course, but now I have your attention ![]() Aber found the DiaVik diamond mine in Canada, one of the worlds biggest. They sold 60% to Riotito who developed the mine. Aber have just bought 51% controlling share of Harry Winston. So why would it not be possible for Riotinto or BHP to buy Tiffany. de Beers would probably like to too, but the US State dept would probably think otherwise.

Well, Comcast, a cable company, wants to buy the Walt Disney Company. Anything is possible!

Old news, Gary. You are at least 6 months late. But you forgot to mention that Tiffany's has a 15% stake in Aber, and a 10-year contract to be supplied with rough for an estimated value of 500 mio$. Because of this, Tiffany's has opened an Antwerp office last month, and will be selling rough here, and having goods cut under their own supervision. I would love to see the surprise on their face, when they find out that their own polished is more expensive than when they buy. Live long, Paul Paul Slegers |

Was this really announced a long time ago Paul??? Yes I did know about Aber and Tiffany. But??? Why would Tiffany work out of Antwerp? Surely they would want to cut in Canada or at least USA? Garry Holloway FGAA DipDT |

Indeed Gary, Why they start up in Antwerp? Well, now, they are going to receive a 'run-of-mine' from Diavik, including many colours, shapes and qualities that they do not use or cannot economically cut in Canada. They need to sell this, and the best place to do this is Antwerp. They do indeed start up cutting in Canada. But everyone in the business knows the problems there. Very high costs, no experience nor a diamond culture, and because of that, very un-economical. The only reason, why some diamonds are cut in Canada, is because mines are obliged to give some rough to local cutters at lower prices, and because they can be labeled as truly Canadian, and some people wish to pay more for this label. That is why they are cutting a big part in Antwerp. Live long, Paul Paul Slegers |

paul is right, the aber-winston deal is old news. they announced the impending purchase months ago.
i have had my doubts about this tiffany-aber thing from the beginning, and paul has hit the nail on the head. tiffany has such exacting standards for what they will sell as a "tiffany." what do they plan to do with the rest (most) of the rough they get from aber? yes, they'll have a steady supply of polished, but it seems more trouble than it's worth.
