I have heard before that brand cleaners bought from jewellers would probably be ammonia with a touch of dye to give it colour. I am asking this today because a friend just told me that years ago she used one of these cleaners on a pair of earrings, very thin 9 carat gold bought in a mall store. She said that she left them in longer than she should have accidentally and when she took them out they had bent a bit. She blamed the jewellery cleaner. This was one of those pots with the basket in them, not an ultrasonic cleaner. Would the jewellery cleaner have caused such damage? I am hesitant now to clean my jewellery in the pot of cleaner I have. |

It is doubtful that the jewelry cleaner bent the piece of jewelry, perhaps the post poked through the holes in the basket and got pinched? Most of the ones that we've seen are 50/50 ammonia and water with a touch of coloring to make them pretty

I emailed Speedbrite the company that makes Gem Sparkle and this is the reply I got: It is primarily a soap much like dish washing detergent . Nothing harmful only as degreaser with surfactant. I don't know if that answers the question, but thats the explaniation from the manufacturer (at least for one type of cleaner) |

I had heard before to use vinegar with a drop of dish detergent and then rinse it well......will vinegar generate any harm?

No. But if you have white gold do not use clorine. |

Basset - just out of curiosity, what whould clorine do to it? I remember when I was in a highschool chemistry lab, someone broke a thermometer and the mercury hit their highschool ring which was 10k gold - turned it as white as platinum!
