Well I don't have great news...but you have some options.
First off, disabuse yourself of the notion that you can resell the ring for anything close to what you paid. The re-sale market is a hard one in terms of items like this. Engagement rings may carry a stigma of a failed relationship and/or people expect to get a great bargain on a 'used' ring. Would venture to say that unless you have a good relationship with a jeweler or a contact in the industry, it will be hard to sell the ring for close to what you paid.
Those are my suggestions. It's harder to sell the stones/ring to a jeweler because they have wholesalers who can probably get them something pretty similar for less than what you'd want. So what is in it for them? Harder to sell privately because then you are dealing with the public and their whims (e.g. you may show it to someone and then they don't buy it, getting your hopes up then down.)
Sometimes people get lucky and are able to sell privately through classifieds or something quite easily and reap a decent return. I would also just try eBay and set a decent reserve, that may be the fastest way...however be warned eBayers want a 'great bargain'. You will lose some money, so know that up front and anything you DO get will be a happy thing.
Good luck!!________________________________ |

Publ1k1 et al, Selling a ring requires the same digilence as buying a Diamond ring. I had asked for a thread on this forum to inform consumers as to how to sell a ring and it was denied. Most of the information Mara listed is, in my opinion good with the exception of her percentages. Percentages are hard to figure and not cut in stone. Some buyers will offer you much less and others offer you more based upon their available funds and needs for what you are selling. In my experience of owning a jewelry store for 32 years and being very active in organizations within the industry the 70% figure is off base as a consignement percentage due you. Although you will be offered that amount the seller will offer you much less when he has a potential buyer in the store and you will have the option to accept a lower offer or not sell your ring. That is reality. I was advised by Lenoid, that I and others on this forum may not make you an offer. I am not permitted to tell you about honest and reliable jewelers in your area who might buy your ring. If because of the above paragraph I am removed permanently from Pricescope, so be it. Selling is an art. Selling to jewelers and interested buyers is just as hard as buying, maybe harder. WARNING: Do not allow the potential buyer to remove the Diamond from the ring, THEN I would suggest you tell the potential buyer they MUST buy the ring MOUNTED or no deal and then walk out. Some people do not know how to remove a Diamond from a ring and have chipped it or WORSE. I KNOW by reading Pricescope these experts tell you NEVER BUY a DIAMOND MOUNTED and that is TRUE, but never SELL a Diamond ring and allow the Diamonds to be removed. It is your ring until they place money in your hand and you count it. Then they can do with it what they wish. Never allow strangers into your home to view the Diamond ring. You are inviting disaster. Uncle Marty Uncle Marty |

Sorry to hear you are taking heat too, Uncle Marty. You are a truly awesome person and I hope to see you on here for a long time. I am surprised it is a problem, as there is another similar thread going currently that has indeed mentioned names, but again its one of the advertisers here so it might not count as against the rules...

There should be no problem private messaging someone, though.

Yes, but thats really not the point. Either this place is an open forum for the discussion of ALL diamond related topics for the education of consumers, Or this place is a vehicle for the discussion of specific diamond related topics all involving only the retail purchase of new diamonds, specifically aimed at educating consumers into altering the way they do only that, directly benefiting a few vendors here on-line by restricting mention of other alternatives. Which one is it supposed to be? It seems perfectly acceptable and even lauded to mention names when it comes to the advertisers on here or the specific brands they carry, but try and suggest an alternative and the thread goes away or there are warnings like Uncle Marty got. If the name he was going to give was an on-line vendor on here it would have been perfectly O.K. That is an accepted part of the double standard we all live with and agree to by being here.

Dear Griffin, I appreciate very much you participation in the forum when you share your experience and educate consumers. I don’t think, however, that expressing your irritation on the public forum is a positive contribution. If you have comments on moderation of this forum they are welcome via emails or PM (see forum policies). It is true and should be obvious that as a moderator I have to notify ALL the vendors (including advertisers) and service providers if they offer/promote any service or product because it is against the forum rules, which all of you agreed upon when signed up to this forum. Yes I asked Uncle Marty not to offer his services on the forum because it is against the rules. Just two days ago I removed two threads by Jonathan (advertiser, GoodOldGold) because I considered them as promotional. Interestingly, that after exchanging a few emails Jonathan accepted my point of view and didn’t complain in public. With the help of forum members I try my best to prevent the forum from becoming a classified board and if sometimes I missed something please point it out using email or PM. It looks like you are upset that consumers recommend Mark Morel but this is inevitable on the consumers’ forum when consumers allowed to recommend other vendors, not the vendors promoting themselves. Thank you for understanding. Leonid Pricescope.com PS: Mara is right. DM and everybody, please conduct your negotiations and details via private communications. Pricescope |

>It looks like you are upset that consumers recommend Mark Morel I'm sorry, but I am very confused. I didn't think this or other similar posts had anything to do whatsoever with Mr. Morrell, so your remark seems totally out of any context for me to place it in. Could you please clarify where this response came from? Was there a point I was unclear on in my last post, or was this from you simply responding to me without actually reading my post first? Perhaps this was instead simply an attempt to change the subject away from one you are uncomfortable with? If you could help me out here I would appreciate. As for the rest of your post, I agreee and will discuss any mediation issues with you more directly in the future.

I don't think that Leonid mis-read anything, in that Custom Setting Design thread Griffin complained about how only certain designers are mentioned on here, specifically Mark Morrell. Griffin, how can you say that you don't know what Leonid is talking about? Do you reside on the same planet and are you capable of reading your own words?
Personally I find all of this rather distasteful and these thread hijackings very passive-aggressive. Why play in a sandbox where you find the rules constrictive and every 3rd post is a whine of some sort about how you can't really be yourself in this type of environment. In my opinion, it is quite simple. If you don't like it here, don't stick around! The people who are here on Pscope spend their time helping others, no one wants to hear the moaning of discontent. I personally don't find your posts so titillating or educational that I want to read about your complaints as well.
My 2 cents.

UNCLE MARTY, I FOUND YOUR RESPONSE EXTREMELY HELPFUL AS A BASIC CONSUMER, AS I DID MARA'S. THIS WAS THE TYPE OF 'TO THE POINT' INFORMATION I AM IN SEARCH OF.THANKS FOR HONEST OPINIONS/FACTS. TO MOST NON-JEWELERS ANYTHING DEALING WITH DIAMOND PURCHASE OR SALE IS CONSIDER A LARGE MONETARY & POSSIBLY EMOTIONAL INVESTMENT... WHETHER IT'S LESS THAN A CARAT OR MORE. THEREFORE HAVING HONEST ACCURATE FEEDABCK IS CRUCIAL.... AND SO APPRECIATED. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE EDUCATION
Thank You! |
