Hi all, I am checking this bad boy out but am having soon to be buyer's remorse. It's a 1.5 carat D SI1 for about $13.5k. The numbers look good, HCA =1.7 and AGA = 1A cut. However, the scope images have some imperfections. Would these likely have any discernable impact on the beauty of the stone??? Thanks for any help! It is going to be a very good looking diamond. I doubt you can discern the tiny faults that show themselves in the H&A pattern to be anything actually visible when you look at the stone.

strmdr - can you see them?? they appear for me and hopefully everyone else... aljdewey - what am I crazy? - I am not expert with these tools so I can't judge how bad an imperfection is. David - thanks for taking a peek. JC

I should admit I have trouble understanding what imperfections you are talking about? The inclusions and their refections look quite tiny and scattered - these should be invisible unless magnified. The H&A pattern itself is very fine - in my view - with no issues I would point out. ANd the ideal Scope picture, looks, well, ideal. Which of these was your original concern? Wow, the numbers are great, and the image looks awsome! Please post pictures when you have it set. I am a color freak, and a D would be the ultimate for me.

AnA: The H&A image is very distinct, but there are several small problems discernible from the image. Some of the clefts in the hearts are not the same as the rest. There is some misalignment of the arrows. The more someone looks, the more can be seen, BUT you have to have a critical eye for it. Brian Gavin of Whiteflash was nice enough to give me a detailed lesson on this subject last year at the Las Vegas jewelry show when we met. The whole H&A thing seems to me to be a fortunate accident, but after talking with an expert who understands how to interpret the H&A pattern, I have come to see that it can be used to analyze the symmetry and potential of a diamond, too. Valeria101 - mostly the blotches over the 2,4 and 9 o'clock hearts, and the white specks on the scope. And now for the setting....oh no! Thanks all JC "out" << isn't that annoying!! The FCC should ban that too!

I agree that there is some room for improvement in the H&A pattern - but I think the word "small" in the post by David Atlas is key. This stone's cut makes it very desirable. As for the 'blotches' - these are the highly magnified and strongly outlined representations of some transparent incusions way smaller than 1mm. I would call such a thing 'blotch' if it happened on the lens of a microscope. Otherwise, 'speck' or 'pinpoint' would be the words. There will be no color contrast between the nclusions and the diamond: those are transparent in real life. Also, the Iscope picture hides away the sparkle of the stone which can usually hide many more inclusions than this. This is not a realistic representation of inclusions at all. As for the pink areas on the Iscope image, you may want to inspect some explanation (HERE ) and examples on the Iscope Ref Chart (HERE). So? the setting is next... what do you have in mind ![]() Ana "The greatest experts are only as good as the sum total of what they have seen." [Souren Melikian] |
