Hey, hope some of you can help.

I have searched and not found a lot of info on trillion cuts. Especially what constitutes a better vs poorer cut. I know in the end you have to look at it. Some perfer the straight sides and some like a little bulge to the sides. Gem appraisers has a do it yourself cut guide but they do not have anything for trillions. Also no price stat here listed for trillions.

Is there a cut guide or price stat listing someplace?

Second, I have been looking to get an engagement ring for my girlfriend. We both have been married before. I have been doing this all by myself. ) I want something different and something with more of a unique or custom look in two tone. I have been looking in the 1.5 to 2.5+ carat range for a diamond and have liked marquise, hearts, and trillions. I have had good luck with searching here and having some on line vendors assist me. I have done a lot of reading on line here and other diamond sites in the past two months, so I have a decent knowledge of the factors and tradeoffs. Local places are nice, but I have found they are THOUSANDS of dollars over what I can do on line for the same size and quality stone.

Is there anything I should consider before choosing a trillion, heart, of marquise cut, besides the 5 Cs?

Thanks for your help and advice!!

You had mentioned that you were doing this by yourself...

You should make sure that you know that she wants a marquis, heart or trillion...she may have something else in mind

They are lots of ways to make it unique and different...

Do you think she would like to work with you on this a bit and be suprised when you give it to her...

Sorry I don;t have more info for you...I don't think there are cut grade charts for these shapes...

Cut grade charts... there are some. Did you see these? WWW with the corresponding cut quality concept explained HERE.

The one thing these charts do not do is guarantee light return - the optical properties of the stone which some may judge more important than proportions. There are ways to test this extra cut quality feature, and some stones are sold with such analysis already done (examples: marquises and more ).

The shapes you have selected are not known for their best light return - the rounds are tops in this category, with some purpose-cut fancies following. Some of this reputation is due o the fact that most hart and trillion shapes are cut overly shallow, for bigger spread rather than brilliance. This does not have to be the case of your stone, of course.

Yes, thanks, I have read what you listed already and it has been helpful for the marquise, and to a lesser extent the heart. I have not found any such in for the trillion.

There were a few more inquiries about trillions. Did you see THIS thread? The same poster also started topics on settings for trillion center stones...
