A friend has a plain wedding band with the inscription PLAT. My platinum rings say PT 950. does the 'plat' mean it has less platinum, or maybe is white gold or something dipped in platinum? thanks to anyone who may be able to answer!

Hi, Platinum can take any number of marks, all of it is at least 900 or 90% platinum 10% other...kind of like sterling silver 92.5% Different alloys have been used for different applications. Usualy the other 5% to 10% is Ir...witch hardens the plat. Ir is worth more than Platinum as it is more rare ect. But all and all it does not really matter. Plat is plat for the most part.

"Plat" is reserved by FTC standards for platinum alloys of at least 95% purity. Platinum jewelry with less than 95% purity is required to also have qualifying marks such as "10% irid" etc...

Hello I found this link that says it all about the markings of platinum. http://www.professionaljeweler.com/archives/articles/1998/apr98/0498fp1.html 950 Platinum or PLAT = 95% platinum with 5% of another metal mix to give it hardness. 900 Platinum is 90% platinum.
