Interesting to know that the little icon you use to identify yourself, actually had a lexiconic meaning as follows:
(but what does yours say about you...? Like, Cassandra's cute little girl avatar, or Leonid's little guy on his avatar, Diamondlil's eye avatar?  )

 avatar \AV-uh-tar\, noun:
   1.  The  incarnation  of  a  deity  --  chiefly  associated
in Hinduism with the incarnations of Vishnu.
   2.  An  embodiment,  as  of a quality, concept, philosophy,
or tradition; an archetype.
   3. A temporary manifestation or aspect of a continuing
entity.
Examples in usage:

In  1517,  the year of their first contact, the Aztecs took
the  Spaniards  to  be  avatars of Quetzalcoatl, the plumed
serpent, god of learning and of wind.
     --Paul Theroux, [1]Fresh Air Fiend

People . . . believe he was some sort of avatar of peace
     and love, the ultimate hippie.
--Edna  Gundersen,  "For  $60,  a  ticket  to read," [2]USA
     Today, October 5, 2000

It would seem that no definitive identification can be made
(Rimbaud  the  symbolist,  the  surrealist,  the Bolshevik,
Rimbaud  the bourgeois, the crook, the pervert, Rimbaud the
prophet,  the  superman,  the mystic, Rimbaud the Catholic,
the  cabalist,  the  atheist,  etc.);  the  latest "proved"
avatar  is forever recycled as evidence -- faulty or secure
-- on which to base the next.
--Richard Howard, "There Was Only One Rimbaud," [3]New York
     Times, November 19, 2000
     _________________________________________________________

Avatar  is  from  Sanskrit avatara, "descent" (of a deity
from heaven),  from  avatarati,  "he descends," from ava-, "down"
+ tarati, "he crosses, he passes over."

"Sometimes it's OK to throw rocks at girls...as long as they sparkle! "

The name of a ladybird in Norwegian is Mari-hone Mari being a form of Mary, (the mother of christ) and hone meaning Hen.

So we basically share a name.

It is particularly apt as my party piece is a corker of a chicken impression so I am truly a Mari hen.

The photo I chose does not really fit that definition. It's a logo for fiestaware, and I wanted folks to know that I collect it! I also have different user names on some other forums, so I hope that using the same avatar helps identify me!

I wish I could see your chicken impression, Mari!

My avatar is a delicate Victorian cameo that I love because it's actually a picture of a Maenad--a frenzied follower of Dionysus, the god of wine. (I think it was Valeria who identified her for me as a Maenad. Thanks, Ana!) It's a beautiful cameo, and I love the idea that staid Victorian ladies were wearing pictures of drunken madwomen on their dresses.

Well it could mean I dwell in the past (which I do somewhat, but the *historical* past), however in this case has a more prosaic reason. It's the only scanned/digital pic I have of me in which you can see my face. I could use the powder blue blur pic, which is me on my x-cntry skis, but I think this one is better.

On my other message board I have a great dancing chicken as my avatar but the file was too big for Pricescope.

When I got the pics of my new ring I knew I wanted one as my avatar. I chose the one that didn't look as much like Diane's. I mean, I copied her ring as it is...I don't have to copy her avatar too!

I love Brittanys. We volunteer as a foster family for American Brittany Rescue. This is my favorite foster dog, Odie. (The one we should have kept for ourselves)

I wanted to keep as much anonymity as I could. So, I took one of the stock images and changed the color to hot pink. This way, I feel totally anonymous, but I have a little bit of individuality too!

So, I guess what my avatar says about me is that I'm a private person!

Mine is supposed to be my 8* DVatche™ Xprong ring but is came out a bit distorted.

I tried to upload a different one but it won't let me.

So I guess my avatar says about me:
I am confused and distorted.

Right now, this avatar tells you that the inherent value of my diamonds is the love and commitment with which they were given. As discussed in prior threads, my original eRing isn't the biggest or most perfectly cut stone, but it is most beautiful to me.

My other avatars have been pictures of my dogs, both rescued from shelters, and both extraordinarily sweet, smart, and beautiful.

The pic in mine is my mini dachshund Magnolia, aka Maggie, hiding in some tall grass. It just goes along with my user name, as doxie is a short name for dachshund, and I am her mom (see the thread "about doxiemom" ) .........so I guess I have a sort of theme thing going on.

Mine just says...I LOVE SPARKLY DIAMONDS.

My first one...used for a long while...was Buttercup from the PowerPuff girls who I could relate to because she was the bitchy but depectively cute PowerPuff gal.

Then I switched to one of my favorite pieces of artwork by MackenzieThorpe which is one of my favorite artists...he does alot of children-like cartoon art and I have loved his work for years. I love the big cute heads of the children, and the representation of love in most of the pictures. I own a large replica, but no real pieces...yet.

Then I had Daphne's legs for a while in honor of the Scooby gang here on Pscope...

The current one is Greg's ACA....  I just love looking at the perfection daily.

Here's a compiled image of my avatars in the past.

Hmm that image did not work, trying again.

Buttercup was before Leo made the avatar sizes larger..so she's really tiny. I use her on my AOL IM as well..my MOH/best friend has the blond powerpuff gal that is sweet and innocent.

Hi everyone! My avatar, like my name, is a clownfish. Clownfish are my favorite kind of fish, and I have used this screen name for many things - unfortunately many people now assume my love for clownfish developed from Finding Nemo, however I assure you I was a clownfish-lover far earlier than when Nemo came out.

Doxiemom - I love your avatar! I have two dachshunds at home which I adore and I miss them so much (I am at college), so it's nice to see little reminders of them, like in your avatar, every now and then.

He he, Nicrez! Great Q...

It sounds like the dictionary needs to add a few more definitions to account for our "avatars"; definition #3 sounds almost funny, relatively. So... the " temporary manifestation or aspect of [this] continuing entity " is a peek into a blue sapphire

Mine's a metaphor.

Bagpuss is a character in a children's tv programme. Emily (his owner) brings broken things for him to look at. When he wakes up, he and his friends mend the item. When he goes back to sleep, so do all his friends.

I thought this story matched pretty much what happens on Internet forums. People bring questions/problems to the forum, everybody tries to help fix the problem and then, like Bagpuss, we all go 'back to sleep'.

Once upon a time
Not so long ago
There was a little girl and her name was Emily
And she had a shop
It was rather an unusual shop because it didn't sell anything
You see, everything in that shop window was a thing that somebody had once lost
And Emily had found
And brought home to Bagpuss
Emily's cat Bagpuss
The most Important
The most Beautiful
The most Magical
Saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world
Well now, one day Emily found a thing
And she brought it back to the shop
And put it down in front of Bagpuss
Who was in the shop window fast asleep as usual
But then Emily said some magic words

Bagpuss, dear Bagpuss
Old fat furry cat-puss
Wake up and look at this thing that I bring
Wake up, be bright
Be golden and light
Bagpuss, Oh hear what I sing

And Bagpuss was wide awake
And when Bagpuss wakes up all his friends wake up too
The mice on the mouse-organ woke up and stretched
Madeleine, the rag doll
Gabriel, the toad
And last of all, Professor Yaffle, who was a very distinguished old woodpecker
He climbed down off his bookend and went to see what it was that Emily had brought
[Then after Bagpuss and his friends help out]
Bagpuss gave a big yawn, and settled down to sleep
And of course when Bagpuss goes to sleep, all his friends go to sleep too
The mice were ornaments on the mouse-organ
Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls
And Professor Yaffle was a carved wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker
Even Bagpuss himself once he was asleep was just an old, saggy cloth cat
Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams
But Emily loved him

(Plus I like cats, a lot)

Mine is that that I saw many people's avatars of bright and shiny diamonds, jewelery, or H&A images, and I thought I'd be cheeky and put the worst ugliest diamond possible (and it was for sale too!)

Cheers,

Chris

He he, I remember that rock ! It was on E-bay... but the auction ceased just as I intended to link the page to the forum. After all, one does not see a FIVE carat I3 piece faceted every day. It must take some work to polish that hay stack... but who would wear or display it other than for fun ?
