I have the chance to get a D color, VVS2, 1.03 carat diamond, no fluorescence, princess cut at an excellent price. However the proportions are not ideal. Table is approx 80%.

For about the same price , I could get a G colour VS1 or VS2 with better proportions.

I know that I need more information, but do you think I should turn down the deal to get a better cut/proportioned diamond?

thanks in advance.

My answer is  !
Cut should be your first priority!

Yes I would keep looking. Princess cuts don't return that much light to begin with so you really need to focus on maximizing that cut in order to get the most light return and scint in that stone. You may have a D VVS if you buy that other one, but it will probably not look 1/2 as good as a well-cut princess..and what is more important. Telling people it's colorless and almost flawless or having them be mesmerized by the sparkle coming from the stone and unable to ask you any questions? Hmm tough call...hee hee.

Definitely keep looking. Don't settle when it comes to the stone for an engagement ring!!

If the price of the D-VVS is the same as for a G-VS, than the stone has a serious discount. Just as some stones are priced at a premium for very good cut quality, the worst cuts are priced at a discount. I should say that only the worst pieces, so distorted that even a casual observer can see the "weird" appearence and dislike it, are discounted for cut.

However, all you mention is ONE number: no one can really say wether YOU will like or dislike a princess cut with an 80% table! The stone will probably loose some of it's potential 'sparkle', but the Dcolor and flawless clarity will be there for all to see. If light return is not your priority, you may like the thing. Did you see it?

This is a princess cut with 80% table, and VG symmetry and polish - certainly not discounted for it's cut ! Ugly ?

... and the same near a princess cut with a 64% table (good symmetry and polish). If SHAPE rather than light return is your priority, not sure which looks better at all.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies.

I will be going to look at the diamond tomorrow and will let you know what I think, but I certainly have not decided based on you helpful opinions.

Cheers,

The Fridge

Valeria, you have a point, but symmetry alone really isn't a good reason to decide on any princess. I've seen lots of princesses and that 80% table most likely is going to create a hugely glassy appearance. In fact, most of the princesses I have to pretend to ooo and ahhh over have those huge table and really glassy looks. They're really unattractive and, unless you're a pure size queen, really hard for anyone who knows anything about diamonds to get excited about.

I know, I know... but just imagine what the combination of "fair" symmetry and an ~80% table does Faced with some of those, you'd wish for the "gassy" look instead of the "crushed" look. Since quite a few people like and buy things like marquizes and emerald cuts, I would imply that light return sometimes is just primus inter pares...
Actually, it just so happened that the stone with the largest table also had better symmetry: this was not meant to be my point. Actually, after posting these I found the example I was looking for: the portret of a stone with a 87% table and good symmetry. Sometimes one just wanders why are not these cut flat: why bother with that tiny slope called "crown" anyway ?

Thefringe: I hope you will get to see a princess cut for light return on your way, so both contenders get side by side for you... Of course, your further comments and decission is very welcome

Heh Heh, Hest!! Ain't that the truth!! But you know, Color and Clarity is where it's at!!

Why use a big word when a diminutive word would be succinct!
