Hi Gary,
I've recently had some unanswered questions regarding performance of pear-shaped diamonds of different cut grades.  There seems to be few ideal-scope images on pears that I have seen.  Would it be possible to see images of pears with different cut grades (excellent, fair, and poor) similar to that shown for rounds?

My pear is a cut grade 2B.  When viewed through the ideal-scope, I see even amounts of red/pink and white all over with a little more red/pink at the the bow-tie area.  How much differently would a cut grade 1A appear through the scope?  Since I've found little to no information on percentage of light return gained or lost due to variances in cut grade, I might understand it better and be able to make my own judgement call if I could see a visible difference in the ideal-scope image for a few.

Thanks,
Diamondlil

Try GOG's site for fancy stones for sale. Rhino usually has some scope images on his stones, pears included.

Thanks, Mara.  Unfortunately, he only has 3 pears, and only 1 has a light-scope image.  Looks very similar to what I see when I view my pear with the ideal-scope (red/pink and white throughout), although proportionally my diamond has a smaller table and is cut deeper.  GOG's stone is more solidly red in the bow-tie area.  I wonder whether this could be due to the shallower depth and/or larger table.  It would be nice to have several images for comparison.

Gary, are you awake yet?

Sorry - having trouble logging on

Fancy shapes are seldom great performers with the ideal-scope. Pears are no exception, and are among the worst shapes for light return, but have a lovely natural shape
You want the most red you can get, and a balnced distribution of the leakage and dark areas - but the proportions that give this will be short and squat – so the shape will not be pleasing. The Ideal-Scope.com website fancy pages section will help you, but do not expect the results you see in a round stone.

Here is a DiamCalc eg

It is compared to a nice round diamond that rates 1.00 on every score.

Thank you, Gary.  The image you posted is very similar to what I see when I view through my ideal-scope.
