My friend lives in Sydney and I live in NY. We're trying to come up with a mid-way point for us to meet up for a mini-vacation. Since I'm geographically impaired, I'm having a hard time finding a nice (and not overly expensive) country or island that we can both fly to in 10-12 hours. We're hoping for a relaxing vacation, which means doing nothing but lay on the beach and do some watersports. Anyone have any ideas/suggestions on where we can go? I've already looked at Fiji (too far for me), Maldives (super expensive), and South Africa. Any other countries I should look at?

Thanks!

We had a blast! But did not have enough time to go to Phuket so that's still on my list
So is Cambodia and Vietnam! Have you been there?

How about Brazil? Gorgeous scenery, loads of fun, relatively middle ground for you and your friend.  I was going to suggest Bali, but it would be a long flight for you whereas your friend in Sydney would have a much shorter flight, though Bali is so beautiful!

Shopaholic, I'm from Indonesia originally so I've been to Bali a few times and it's still my favorite vacation spot. I'm saving Bali for next summer when I go visit my family.
