I'm working on a design for the reset of a RB and have a few questions. To any of you PSers inclined to offer me some feedback, thanks in advance!

1. The RB I'm working with was GIA certed once upon a time (*many* moons ago), but I can't find the cert. I do remember the basic info, though. Must I/should I have the stone reappraised before I reset it?

2. The new setting will be 18k gold with a mix of diamonds and colored stones, and some pave work. I plan to get quotes from WF and BGD; any other vendors I should consider? I'm perfectly fine with the idea of engaging someone long-distance (within the US), so location is not a priority.

3. Will the jeweler provide me an appraisal of the finished product? Or just a bill of sale/receipt? Assuming the latter, will this suffice for insurance purposes?

Again, all comments are welcome!

I think James/Caleb Meyer do beautiful work with 18kt gold and colored stones and diamonds. But the pave part in your description is probably not a good fit for their styles.

I've read on previous PS threads that Wink Jones has an excellent custom designer (Ocean?).

Can you post a description of the style you're looking for, e.g., modern, antique, bezel, etc.? That might help generate more ideas.

ETA: The jeweler where I live who has done custom work for me has always provided an appraisal when I picked up the finished piece. And I have used her appraisal for insurance with no trouble.

Thanks for the reply and info. The setting I want to end up will incorporate the following elements:

a. bezel set diamond
b. colored stone pave around crown (color/stone TBD)
c. white and yellow gold

Here's one of my 'inspiration' rings:

Those pictures are really helpful -- thanks, FireMonkey! I love, love, love that design -- especially the first one with the colored stone.

I have seen some designers on Etsy that may be able to capture the idea you have. I'll see if I can locate their names.

Does Jane Taylor do custom work? Her designs have that feel. I've seen her designs on the Pearlman's site. Haha -- too funny, I just noticed that the first ring picture you posted is by Jane!

Also, check claypot for some links to other designers that may do custom work.

sarap:

Thanks so much for your input. I'll check out the designers you mentioned so far. I don't know if Jane Taylor does custom, but I love her work so it's worth looking into.

I'm really excited about my little project - thanks for sharing!
