Does a diamond have to be removed from its setting for an appraisal to be performed?

Hi. If your appraisal is strictly for insurance and replacement purposes, many times a good gemologist is able to get all the information needed even though a stone is mounted. At that time, you are basically looking for a ballpark to insure your ring in case of theft or loss. However, if you are thinking about purchasing a diamond that is already mounted and arent' sure about the carat weight, cut, color, clarity, etc. and need an appraisale to get a professional opinion on your purchase, you should get it appraised loose. Sorry, I should have specified. The appraisal is only for insurance purposes on a newly purchased ring. I have the full AGS grading report.
