Ahhhh me and my new fiancee fell in love with a 2.66 L-M vs ??? diamond set in platnium from 1920"s
we think.  Purchased it at an fine art estate store in FL.  2 day return policy.  We got it yesterday.
for 13,9000.00 they made us leave it there to save 1000.00 taxes on shippping to SC where I live.
No papers, no appraisal and no GSI.
I really liked it but think we paid to much.
Help.
I still have a few hours to undo this.

I'd undo it.

Too much money to not be sure of what you are buying.

Better yet, call the seller and tell them you either want a refund or more time to have it appraised before you decide.

Don't be rushed.

BTW it is gorgeous - but be wise.

When the appraisal comes back make an offer that makes sense.

HI:

Ditto to the independent appraisal.  Richard Sherwood is in Sarasota and if possible, I would take it to him for this appraisal.

For a "compairson" there is a 2.34 EGL certified J SI1 on this site....$12, 750 in platinum, original art deco.

The 2 day return policy bothers me.  That's barely enough time even to schedule an appraisal with most appraisers.

On a purchase of that amount, I would expect at least a 10 day return policy.

It's a buyer's market.  You're in the driver's seat.  I like Moh's advice to tell them you want a full refund or more time to have it appraised (10 days minimum after receiving the package), with a right of return for any reason if not satisfied.

When you say "no papers", does that mean you don't have an invoice?  How did you pay, cash, check or credit card?

CC we just have a receipt for 13,900
it is a vs but not sure which one.
It looks lovely under the loop no marks.
I still think we paid to much for a 2 day.
I am running out of time now have to make a choice.

Will they let us take it for the apprasial?  they said no refund for any reason after 2 days.
That kind of makes me leary now that the sparkles have worn off.

I love reading your posts.
I like the old world rings too.
Just don't want to get taken.
It just feels like we may have paid to much.

OH thank you for your help.
I have always depended on the kindnesss of strangers.
smile
called Gesner I actually spoke with Frank Gesner.
He was a very nice man.
He told me he would send me an email that stated if the appraisal should fall below the
sales price that he would refund the difference.

He wanted me to go with Molly Harrison supposedly she worked at the GIA lab in CA.
I feel a bit uneasy about using one of the stores appriasers.
They said they were independent but really now.
Didn't the Independent HOME appraisers of america get a few numbers wrong.
And they were hired by the bank.  Least in SC they were.
So what do you think?
Lets talk about the setting and the cut.

Really an appraiser of your choosing is the way to go, not one that the seller wants you to use.  Rich Sherwood who advised you above is a highly qualified independant appraiser in Florida who has a top reputation.  Its up to you but personally I would want it in writing that I had a decent return policy and that I could return the diamond for a full refund should the stone not check out to my satisfaction for any reason during an independant appraisal.  The terms of refunding the difference for the selling price should the diamond not check out as sold would not be acceptable to me but again its your call.

depending on when your headed home Rich is only an hour and a half away and you could site see on the trip.
You might consider seeing if he has an opening to look at it tomorrow.
Then get it in writing that the appraisal must match the grading and price or you can return it for a 100% refund.
Pick it up and take it for Rich to appraise.
That is what I would do if he is available.

Wait a minute. The STORE wants to pick the appraiser?
What do they have to hide?

HELLO! Can you say,"RED FLAG?" OR "CONFLICT OF INTEREST?"!

It is insulting to you as an intelligent customer for a store to even suggest, let alone insist upon, their own appraiser for a used diamond with no lab grading report!

I'd run, not walk away, from this sale and this seller.

I'd get a refund. NOW!

Plus I'll bet the diamond will be there next month if you want to sniff around more then.
I'll bet the seller will be more reasonable in August.

I have to agree. It seems very fishy that they are giving you NO time to think about it on a purchase that large. I would undo it. The link about has many beautiful art deco rings for less, plus they are much more willing to work with you.

I vote for this plan, as well!

The two day return policy is a red flag for me, unfortunately. It looks like a pretty ring, though!

The two-day return policy puts you under a lot of pressure and I don't trust sellers who put buyers in the position on having to decide on a purchase of this magnitude in 48 hours! That, plus the suggestion that you use their appraiser, just doesn't pass the smell test!
