So I went to a jeweler today to look at some stones and my budget is $15k.

The jeweler showed me one stone for $12.5k that I liked.

GIA Report
2.04 C
J
SI2
Excellent

Polish - VG
Symmetry - E
Fluorenscence - None

Table - 58%
Depth - 62.4%
Medium - slighty thick

Is a SI2 any good?  Should I get a higher quality stone but smaller in size?  He also showed me several in the 1.5-1.7 range for around $9k.

Hi and welcome to pricescope!!!  Well can you get us more info like the crown and pavilion angels from the cert?  Was the SI2 eye clean when you were looking at it?  some SI2's can be eye clean.

Ditto need those crown and pavilion angles ...    Did you notice any visible inclusions??  What were the other stones like that he showed you??  Did this one speak to you?

Ditto my good friends above, the angles are needed as well as the diameter measurements please.

I'm not really sure how to read the GIA report so I'm going to try to put some numbers out there according to the picture.  Hopefully, the experts here can help me out.

Starting from the top of the picture.

55%|-------|58% (Table)      That's what shown at the top of the diamond.

Than on the right 15% for the top portion of the diamond (crown?)
Angles to the right of the diamond show 35.5 at the top and 41.0 at the bottom.

Does that help?

Yes that looks fine but the 35.3/41 angle combo is not good and can lead to light leakage in the diamond.

Just for comparison's sake, here is a diamond from Good Old Gold with similar size and clarity to the one you were shown:

2.02ct J SI1 Round Diamond

This diamond scores well on the Holloway Cut Advisor (1.9, just on the tip of AGS ideal) and has Idealscope and ASET images showing great light return.  You would have to verify with GOG that the stone is eye clean, but as an SI1 it is likely cleaner than the one you looked at in the store.

The one you looked at in the store shows a 4.1 on the Holloway Cut Advisor.  Generally speaking, you want to pass over diamonds that score from 2 through 10, and then from there take the ones that score from 0 through 2 and compare the stats on those.
