There are so many optionis and so much information and I'm exahusted from looking. I have $4200 to spend and I want to get the best looking Round cut diamond I can find. Quality comes before size. I've looked at every combination of specs that exist. Any suggestions from an expert ?

That budget is just for the rock or includes the setting?

You have a conflict in your goals. The "best looking" diamond will likely not be a D color and Internally flawless stone, However, it must be finely cut, such as an AGS0 graded rock. If you truly want "quality comes before size" then only D-IF would make the grade. You may want to think about what you want versus what you describe. Most people on Pricescope seem to want a finely cut diamond with reasonable compromises in color and clarity. F-H color and VS1 to SI1 is probably the sweet range for high quality color and clarity. This may help you target with more security. David S. Atlas |

So if I'm understanding you correctly when looking for quality start with the best cut you can find then work back though color and clarity. How then can you determeine the best cut. If I only search for ideal cut diamonds are there major differences between them or are they all going to sparkle about the same?

I think you have it right. To my mind, and to many others, AGS has developed the "AGS BRAND". Yes, AGS0 is a particular take on what makes a finely cut diamond and those who adopt it with great fervor are using AGS0 as a BRAND indentity as well as many others who use it as a grade only. There are other potentially fine cut and highly beautiful models to choose from, but for a novice who is smart enough to not trust everything someone tells them, AGS0 is one safe way to go. That's why I suggest it. One could write a book on viable alternatives, but AGS has done a good job of making their case.

It is a well above average stone, but I wouldn't call it exceptional based on the IS. EDT: Lorelei is right, it may not be noticeable IRL. Any of my opinions are worth exactly what you paid for them. I am absolutely no expert, but a newbie like you, and I just wanted to mention that this website and along with all the recommendations for the good old gold website have really helped me. Just speaking from my experience trying to learn more about diamonds, the videos he does for clients or just for edification make lots of abstract points and qualities about diamonds very clear to me. I don't know if it helps at all, but since the stone you mention is a H&A, I thought I would give you a link to this video of a stone in your price range at the GOG site. http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4828/ Their homepage currently has two other videos on round brilliant stones, and which kinds of rounds one might pick. Hope that helps.

Wow you guys are great. I think I'm going to go with an H&A cut, H or better, and VVS2 or better for around $4200 (just the stone). Any other suggested stone will be appreciated. I will probably pick one that is suggested on this forum.

I just wanted to add that you're pretty much guarateed eye clean at VS2, so there's no need to pay for vvs. You'll never see inclusions in a VS stone.

This one falls outside your clarity parameters a smidge, but if you felt like maximizing size some, maybe this one would be a decent choice? (To my untrained eye, those seem like tiny tiny flaws in the micro images, but it could also just be that an H-VS1 ended up being our choice for my Ering. lol.) Perhaps the experts might not favor this stone tho? .88ct, H VS1 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5957/

Date: 6/5/2009 11:02:45 AM Author: bimsuper Thanks. Ill drop down to VS2 then. You will be absolutely fine with VS2 and in many cases SI1 as far as being able to see anything with your eyes. Plus you may have difficulty locating them with a 10X loupe unless a jeweler shows you what to look for. These clarity ranges will save you a lot of money and will have no effect on the beauty of the stone. SaraPJ |
