Hi,

My new husband-to-be gave me a Lazare Kaplan engagement ring purchased from a local jewelry store. Does this brand mean its a great cut? He does not have any of the measurements. I believe they are mailing the papers to us. Also, I am wondering what a fair price would be, considering it's from a jewelry store. All I know is that it's a 1.0 ct, H, Si2 (I'm no expert but I can;t see any inclusions) He paid $5600 - what do you think?

I don't know anything about that either but lazare kaplan sounds like a designer? maybe its the cut who knows-not me but if you think it looks beautiful and so does he who cares? right? i think that price also sounds reasonable! and by the way i like the special k name any reference to Breakin'?

The LK brand is about light return... but there are quite a few of this sort. Not that I know a load of info about Lazare diamonds, but, regardless of the name on the box, it is great to have some technical proof of what you are paying for. Will you receive any analysis of light return or other cut parameters, of just the lab report? I am quite curious about how this turns out: there is so much ado about this brand ! Hope all is well.

As about the price: it seems in line with what branded gems go for and premium sellers ask, although the top prices are twice as much as the lowest in whatever range of offers Pricescope lists. Not that I would expect that H-SI with top cut to really come for the rock bottom price. Yours seams to match what a top H&A stone would go for, so you should get comparable quality. An eye clean SI2, is a lucky start already

Check Garry (aka Cut Nut) post in this old threads:
Did I overpay for my girl's engagement ring?

Lazar Kaplan were the first branded ideal cut stones cut close to ideal Tolkowski proportions.

Leonid, I know this is not related to this thread, but there is no way I could keep my amazement at bay! Did that piece had a ~90% table? With such "face" a larger stone would look like a floor tyle. Is that a "buff-top" diamond? None of those crossed my way: 10% less and still looks alien. Oh well, surely a unique piece. Are rounds ever blessed with such proportions !?

Forget about twicking 0.5 of a degree in a pavilion angle: how about a round with 83% table ? Now that I dared search...

Just a ()

thanks for your fast replies. SpecialK is the nickname my boyfriend gave me back in high school. I think he was tring to be "cool" and got it from teh drug, but for us now, it's just a term of endearment

I was begging him to save money and buy online, but he hates computers and didn;t have time to do the research, but wanted to be sure he was geting something nice, so he went w/ the Lazare. I am bugging him everyday to call the jeweler to get as much info on the stone as possible, so hopefully it will come soon.

The diamond is glowing white nearly all the time - very bright, but not as colorful as I was expecting based on people's commebts on their diamonds from this site. I am thrilled all the same, but curious to see how it compares to other hearts and arrows

Hi, K:  I can't speak to the performance of this stone, but a quick comment about "getting a better deal".

There is ALWAYS a better deal to be had somewhere....but sometimes getting it "costs" more.  If your fiance felt it was worth it to him to pay a little more to save on his time/frustration.....then it probably was.  (My fiance is the same way.....he'll gladly spend $500 more if it means he won't have to tortune himself for three weeks looking for a diamond.  That's why I did all the research/shoppping! hehhe)

If he's happy with the price he paid (and he is, or he wouldn't have paid it).....then just rejoice in your status as a newly engaged woman!

You pay a premium for an LK stone. A premium that IMHO is worth it in certain circumstances. You absolutely could get as equally beautifully cut stone for less. But, if shopping isn't his forte & money isn't as much an issue then I would highly recommend an LK stone.

They are a cutting house. They are a force in the industry & have been for years. They opened my eyes to the importance of cut years ago when virtually no one was talking about it.

I just called the jeweler and the diamond was not appraised by any independant group, like GIA. Apparently, LK sends basic info like color and clarity w/ the stone to the jeweler, but not more specific info on cut.

Does this mean I should have it independently appraised? If so, what's the best way to locate one in my area?

If it makes you feel better..But, the stone should be inscribed w/ a number - the number should match the LK info. LK stones are what they are.
