If anyone is around today and feels like helping me, I'm getting my hair cut (finally!) tomorrow. It is currently extremely long (3 inches below my bra strap)and definitely needs the ends cut because they are pretty damaged.

I have super think hair that I straighten most days because my hair has an unpredictible wave to it. Sometimes the waves work, sometimes they don't.

I was thinking of adding some layers, but am not sure of much else.

If anyone has suggestions, I'll take em!!

I've added a pic of basically what it looks like now, just a bit shorter. I'm not sure if I should get shorter bangs-style layers?

TIA!

HI:

Layers would be great on you--lighten the weight and give movement.  No straight cut across bangs tho......

cheers--Sharon

Do you want to keep it long, or are you open to do any length?

I like the pic you attached, but I also think you would look fantastic with an angled bob that falls just below your chin.

You have a gorgeous complexion, by the way!

I *think* I want to keep it long. I'm so tempted to go short, but the nerves over possible regret keep me from cutting it. Ugh. However, I do like that bob picture that was posted.

Oh and canuk gal - no WAY would I do the straight across bang thing - it looks awesome on some people but def not me.

My hair was about as long as yours (maybe a bit longer) and I was always scared to cut it. Finally got the courage last year and cut over a foot off....I had a bit longer version of that bob. I wasn't nearly as shocked afterward as I thought I'd be. But, it took me a long while to be ready to cut it off even though I knew I wanted to. Point of this ramble is to say I understand where you're coming from! Maybe do a bit longer version of that bob? It would grow out quickly if you decided you didn't like it?

I cut my hair once in high school - chopped it right off. It was a terrible cut (I was 16!) and if I didn't do it properly, it would flip outwards like I was in the movie Grease or something. I do think that going short could be nice, but I think I'm still too scared. Plus, I really like my long hair (except when I'm super hot and my neck sweats - heck sometimes it gets so hot my scalp gets hot from all the hair!). I rarely ever put it back.

But I'd love to have some style. You know?

I totally know what you mean! I think our hair is verrrry similar from what you are describing. And I have basically the same cut as that picture of Jenny McCarthy Burk posted-and I LOVE it. It's very versatile and works really well. I have also had a slightly longer version and it is a great cut then too! Works well when I try to style my hair wavy/curly and looks great straightened too.

DO IT DO IT! It's a whole different cut than the short-straight across horrible cut that flips out like a 50's girl that we both seem to of had in HS!

Too funny! I had a very similar experience which scared me into not cutting my hair for years! (10 years to be exact) My straightening iron quality now is quite a bit better as well as my hair cut being better so this time my short hair actually looks cute while in high school it was a nightmare!! I felt the same way with my long hair-how do I get some style. I think if you want to stay long just add the layers and the bangs that you can sweep to the side. Found a pic comparison I've posted here before of my long hair vs. new cut. Much more style now.

Hi October!

I would TOTALLY cut it short. I love that pic that Burk posted of Jenny. I think that would look adorable on you!!! I am not really afraid of doing drastic things with my hair though- I have had it every which way, from boy-short to what it is now (similar to yours). My hair is baby fine and straight as a pin- I have no wave/curl at all. I have to say- when my hair is shorter, I have WAY much more volume and body! So I am thinking I am going to cut mine again within the next month or two!

I say, go short! Shorter hair seems more stylish to me, and its nice to make a change once in a while. Hair will always grow back!!!!

I also have long hair (naturally wavy but I blowdry it straight) and I made the mistake of cutting it last year - it's taken forever to grow out.

I cut it up to 2 inches below shoulder length, with layers, and because of my natural waves, the layers turned my hair from a flowing waterfall to a poufy triangle.  I hated it & cried for a month.  It took forever to style (layers are NOT easier than one length) and I still could never make it look good.  It's taken almost a year to grow it back out.

If you do layers, stick with very LONG layers (the shortest around collarbone length).  If you cut in a bang, don't go any shorter than the Jen Garner picture - I would actually start at around cheekbone length, and then sweep them to the side.

Good luck & post pics!

NF I can't believe we had the same HS experience! Hilarious!!

When you cut your hair this last time (like Jenny McCarthy) did you do it all at once or did you go in stages?

And Vesper - I know what you mean aobut the poofy triangle!!! I've had that before too! That is why I can't go in between - I have to be either long or short. Triangle head is one of my fears as well and that is why layers make me nervous.

Burk - thanks for that comparison picture - you look great with both styles!! Do you find the bangs to be high maintenance?

Dani - I can't believe you are pushing me to cut it short!! You've seen all my pics - you think it will be okay? You don't think it will make me look old/bigger or anything weird? (not to say that short hair makes everyone look like that!!).

I think you would look stunning with shorter hair! I would do layers, ending just under your collarbone, and have you stylist thin the ends to give it more flow. I also think long side-swept bangs would look phenomenal on you. It would be great for the summer.

Bah, I always have the hardest time deciding how I want to get my hair cut, too! I'll spend hours "trying on" styles on the Instyle Magazine website, just to panic and wind up still not knowing what I want! One of my best friends is now a stylist, and I finally decided to spare myself the stress and just let her do whatever she wanted to it since she knows me and my taste well enough to not give me liberty spikes or anything. I let her cut 13 inches off my hair a year before my wedding so I could donate it! The style I wound up with was very similar to the bob Burk posted, and I LOVED it. My hair is naturally really wavy, but I found I had a pretty easy time keeping that cut looking good because it was cute messy, curly, wavy, whatever. It's just really versatile. It also grows out really nicely, so if you went for it and hated it, you wouldn't be resigning yourself to a year or more of funky hair!

October The first time I had my hair cut I just went for it! I cut it reaaaaaally short then though-not the best look for me. But then I grew it out and then chopped it again-but this time to this chin length bob.

I have had some variation of this hairstyle since right after my wedding 2 years ago. It looks really great, it's easy to style, and it's nice and fresh. It's a great cut IMO and it works really well for very thick hair if you straighten (which you said you did-right?) and also looks good when worn wavy.

Nope, but I've heard I look like Katie Holmes, Colbie Caillat, Jennifer Aniston, and others I don't remember though.

Sooo...I ended up going with the long layers (big surprise ;-) but the lady didn't do a very good job.

Well that isn't fair - she did a good job on one side of my face but not the other!! Basically, she cut the layers too deep on one side, so if I pull my hair back it looks like the beginning of a bob!!! I told her I wasn't happy and she tried to 'soften' it, but eventually I had to realize there wasn't anything she could do and asked her to stop.

I will try to take some pictures today to show you guys. It isn't the end of the world but it isn't great.

Gah.

The good news is that I have been playing with it trying to see what a bob would look like on me :-) I'll take some pics of that too!!
