I recently got engaged and received a engagement ring with a generic platinum Tiffany style six-prong setting. I love the diamond but have mixed feelings about the setting - it is a little higher than I would like. Part of me feels that it would be a waste to spend more money for a different setting when my fiance already spent $350 on the original setting, but I've had my heart set on either the Vatche Royal Crown or the Superbcert Tiffany (which is lower set). Do you think it would be frivolous to replace the setting? Is there a risk to the diamond by having it reset? What would be the best way to go about ordering a new setting and having it reset? FYI, the diamond is just over 1 carat.

Congratulations! Best news come with the best rocks these days

There are quite a few posts around here from guys who get great diamonds and rather "generic" settings to hold them on the finger at first and allow their girls to get whatever setting they want. Only you know if this is the case, but it seems a common approach and not a "frivolous" one. After all, the cost of the setting is not al that much in the total... The only draw back would be if the giver of the ring may feal bad about it. However, high settings are unconfortable and prone to snatching anything in their way (not a secure thing for either the ring of the other party): a good reason to change. One reason not to change is still that these high settings are unconfortable - so you need a little time to get used to it, if you like it. If not, surely you can ask about getting a more confortable and secure setting. I guess...

Did you see the Tiffany setting at NiceIce ?

I agree that a remount makes perfect sense. If you plan on wearing the ring to more than formal occasions then a high mounting doesn't work. Women are active enough in todays society I see a lot of low or prongless mountings becoming popular.
As for risk to the diamond, I wouldn't worry about it. It does have to be set again in your new mount, but this is extremely minor.
Actually, the risk of a chipped girdle or a lost stone from an active lifestyle with a tall tiffany mounting is probably greater.
You have to wear this thing for a while, if it isn't comfortable, change it.

Hello there. It is common for people to want to change their e-ring setting so I'm sure it won't be a problem getting the diamond reset. If you are worried what your fiance may think about being frivolous, you could suggest keeping the setting and putting a different gemstone in it to wear on your right hand, for special occasions, or whatever, so you can still keep it for sentimental value. You should definitely get a setting that is comfortable to you and something that you love, considering it's a piece you will be wearing for a long long time. Hope this helps! Good luck hunting for a new setting!
