Hi there!

I am going to Dallas for the weekend and would like to know if you have any insight into which hotel you prefer, the Stoneleigh or Hotel Palomar. Is one nicer than the other? It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures.
We will have a car, but it would be nice to be in a location that is central to shops, restaurants, things to see, etc.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Hello,

At the Hotel Palomar, you are right off Central Expressway (US 75) near Mockingbird Lane.  You'll be very close to Highland Park and SMU.  Just a few exits north on Central Expressway, off Northwest Hwy, is NorthPark Center, which offers classic Dallas shopping.  This hotel is a renovation of an old "Hilton" then later "Hiltop" hotel; it's funny to me to see it spiffed up now when I remember a time when it was closed down.  It looks nicely done.

At the Stoneleigh P, you'll be in a classic "grand" hotel in the middle of the Oak Lawn/Uptown areas.  More interesting streets but just a bit harder to get to Central Expressway or the North Dallas Tollway if you need to.  However, in my opinion, the Stoneleigh is a much grander setting and its location offers far more interesting street scenes.   Also, you'll be much closer to the downtown Arts District, if that's where you might be headed, and this area offers more choices of restaurants.

It may depend on where you plan to spend most of your time.

Thank you so much, AGSHF! That was very helpful information. I had no idea that Hotel Palomar was also a renovated hotel..I thought it was a hotel built in 2006.

We have reservations at the Palomar, but the Stoneleigh is sounding better. We do have reservations at Bolla, so we may switch up our booking.

jellycat,

I'm sure that the Palomar renovations are immaculate.  It looks like they gutted the place, so I wouldn't worry about that.  However, its location doesn't provide much in the way of charm, in my opinion.

The Stoneleight is an old landmark and the area around it has seen great changes in recent years, most for the good.

thank you for your input! it led us to switch our booking from the palomar to the stoneleigh. we wanted to be able to walk around a neighborhood and not have to use our car all the time..

but i'm sure both hotels are nice. next time we can check out the Palomar.
