A friend of mine was talking about what kind of ring she would like when she gets engaged. She saw the exact ring on a commercial for a well known "budget" type jewelry store. It was a 3 stone ring, with 1 or 1.5 ctw for $1000. I told her she COULD buy that, but the stones probably look like s**t. She says "oh, I don't really care about quality, I just want sparklies"..... WHAT!?! Poor girl... I really need to send her here for some edumacation!

She needs someone to show her that poor quality = NO sparklies.

LOL! I think she mistakes quality for high $$ and a name brand or something. Do her a favour and tell her so she doesn't have a crummy ring on her finger!

Maybe you can show her very good quality diamonds, than compare it to a badly cut diamond.. Maybe after that she will understand..

Maybe she has a small budget and just wants bigger for her buck. Honestly, most people buy their diamonds at the local mall around here. I would NEVER insult anyone's jewelry choice. Instead, a nice way(rather than saying a ring quality might be like sh*t) is to say that online you might be able to find a better cut diamond for an equal amount of money. I have yet to inspect anyones diamond up close(unless they've asked). If it's pretty and it sparkles and they love it, more power to them. I hope if she does go with something like that, you'll bite your tongue and tell her it's gorgeous.

I didn't care about quality. I just wanted a big diamond but we couldnt afford anything when we were getting engaged least of all anything big! Yes I was clueless but sometimes ignorance is bliss. If I understood how much I had to spend to buy the ring I wanted I would have felt very down. I'm glad I was clueless and I wouldn't have thanked anybody for bursting my bubble.

But if they didn't, I would simply say that what they ended up with was pretty and congrats. I would never belittle their choice - not everyone has a ton of money, me being one of those people. Which is why my setting currently has a cz. To each their own.

I think that a lot of people don't care about diamonds the way PS members do. And I don't exactly consider that a bad thing. Sure, it would amazing if everyone was really educated and strived for perfection...but, it takes all kinds to make the world go round. In terms of budget, $1000 isn't exactly a large amount...it's not "nothing" but it's what I consider to be limited. If all she cares about is size..then she just hit pay dirt. ____________________________ |

Commercials are misleading and cause confusion for the average consumer. They show a three-stone of amazing quailty and pretend it's the crappy $1K ring that one would be purchasing. It's easy for a person to think that a ring of such sort provides the ultimate in sparkles!

She might "just want sparklies" but what she's going get is something that just looks like glass. Quality over quantity. Get her here. Stat.

Meh. Let her get what she wants. She'll either be blissfully happy with it forever, or realize that her huge, included, weird-coloured stone doesn't sparkle the way yours does and want a change. But right now I doubt anybody is going to change her mind.

It's easy for a person to think that a ring of such sort provides the ultimate in sparkles! Exactly. She kept saying how the one in the commercial looks so nice. That's when I told her you have to read the small print at the bottom of the screen that says "this image does not reflect the same c's as the stone for sale"... (or whatever it says) When I asked her if she would mind looking at a stone that had big black chunks in it or looks dull or cloudy, she was horrified!!

I'm sure she's reconsider once she realizes that without decent quality, you're not gonna see sparkles!
