When requesting a custom stone, can you specify size?

I'm looking for a swiss blue topaz  (yeah, I know ) cushion to fit an old setting.  The prior stone in it was 7.8 x 7.8.  If I contact a cutter, can they make me something that should fit this?

Thanks.

Sure, why not? If they have the roughs laying around and if they don't they will keep an eye out for one. Barry is looking for a particular stone for me right now to cut in a cushion.

If it was an alexandrite, I'd say no, but a blue topaz, probably.  HTH. Blue topaz is one of those gems that comes in just about every callibrated size imaginable.  I know Rio Grande carries them in a million different sizes, shapes, and shades.  An 8x8 might be able to fit in the setting as well.  You might save money going through them.  They only sell to the trade, but I signed up and they sell to me.

Thanks T.L.

I'll take a look.  You're right about spending money on a custom of this stone, however the one's I've seen online so far are not well cut.   Thanks again.

How about this one, it's 7,5x7,5mm and seems well-cut?

Oh my gosh... I didn't mean to sound so 'harsh'? So sorry!! That really wasn't the way I was trying to come across.

This is a Swiss electric topaz that Gene cut. I love it, mainly because it looks the same in all lighting, not at all moody. A very nice size and so fun to look at. The price was great for the size:  4.34ct.

Geez.... the above stone was cut by Barry, not Gene. Sorry

Thanks Mochi. A lot.

Great find Ms. Tiger. While lovely, I'm prone to cushions with a bit more of a random pattern. That one is a bit "round brilliant" in the center.

No, I perceived nothing harsh before. You were just being emphatic and I knew that.

I love your Barry stone. I really love your Barry stone. It glows.

I looked around Rio Grande but the cushions were checkerboard and that doesn't work for me, either.

Thanks so very much.

I'm sure any cutter can cut any stone of your choice to a specific size.  TL made a good point that blue topazes are very inexpensive so all the cost is actually in the labour. Depending on who the cutter is, it could be anywhere from $100 to $150.

If you're going to have a stone cut to fit into a specific mounting you should discuss it with the person who'll be setting the stone and make sure that the shape of the cushion will work with the style of setting that you have. A rounded corner cushion needs to be set with double prongs or a bezel in order to keep the stone from twisting and falling out. If you only have four prongs to hold the stone, make sure that the cutter places small flats at the corners, in order to give those prongs something to register against and keep the stone stable. Trying to fit a new stone to an old setting requires more than just a stone size, particularly with shapes that are not round or square, as the distance between the prongs is what matters and yet the stone "size" is across the shortest dimensions of the stone. Make sure to discuss this with both the cutter and the setter.

Good to see you over here - Been a fan for a long time!

SC - Michael's advice you can take to the bank.  Not only does he cut beautiful stones, he also sets them into beautiful jewellery that he also makes.  Rare to find someone who has perfected both disciplines.
