This is a 9.9ct Rubellite pendant from Brazil set in 14k white gold.  It's unheated/untreated.

I've photographed it next to my 5ct Rubellite ring from Madagascar (also unheated/untreated).

Both have small needles and a couple of inclusions when viewed up close or magnified (as in these photos) but at normal viewing distance are eye clean.

Photographing the true colour has proved tricky but in real life I'm seeing a rich raspberry red with pink/purple flashes.  In incandescent light the pendant appears more red.  I haven't seen any brown at all.

Should the pendant be a keeper - your honest opinions please?  The reason I'm asking is that the pendant has cost me £585 which I think is around $800ish.  I know it's a bargain at that price but it's still more than I can afford at the moment.  However, if I send this back, I know (a) I won't be able to get the same deal again and (b) at that price it's deal of the century!!!  So I need to think long and hard about this one and your valuable opinions are required!

So here are some pictures:

Profile shot - I think the pendant may twist when worn.  Not helped because the bale isn't fixed.  Maybe if it's fixed it'll be less of a problem?

It's gorgeous, but my answer depends on what you mean by 'can't really afford it'. If you're going to have to skip paying your mortgage/rent/utilities/whatever to get this then send it back. If it's more than you budgeted to spend on jewelry but is still within your means then keep it.

It looks like it matches your ring perfectly!  I would keep it!  I think you will end up searching high and low for the same at a nice price.   You may end up kicking yourself if you send it back and you can't find another.   On the other hand, do you think you will wear it enough to justify keeping ?  Also,   does it sing to you the way you thought it would?

LD,
Since you're not bowled over by the tsavorite you just got (at least I got that feeling in your other thread), I would return that because it's almost half the price of this rubellite.  Now if this rubellite doesn't make your heart flutter, then I would return it.  It's really difficult to tell from the photographs the true quality of the stone, but if you think it's the absolute steal of a deal and the color is top notch (and you know your gemstones), I would return the tsavorite to AJS and keep this one.  I hope it's not too late to return the tsavorite though.  However, I wouldn't keep it just because it's a good deal.  You know as well as I do that the stone really should make you 100% happy.

I hope that helps.

TL

You're an absolute genius!  Thank you so much.  The Tsav is now parcelled up ready to go back tomorrow (yes, luckily I'm within the returns period) and whilst the Tsav is "nice" it's not what I was expecting.  On the other hand, I've been chasing that Rubellite for nearly 2 years and IRL it's breathtaking.  I was soooooo hoping I'd hate it, it'd turn brown etc., then I wouldn't have to worry about buying it BUT it's not!  I love it!  So now, with your help, it's staying!  x

Thanks Catmom and Kismet.  I do love the pendant and it's such a good match for the ring - despite one being from Brazil and the other from Madagascar!!!

I'm glad that with the return of the tsavorite that you never loved in the first place allows you to keep this rubellite.

LD,
Very nice!  I'm glad you got it for such a good price, and I'm glad to be of help to you in your decision.  I think you're making a smart decision by returning the tsavorite.  Enjoy your new rubellite!
