Are you going to have a car Deco?  And when are you going?

I'm joining DH who is already there & he has a rental car (there are crazy low last minute fares -- thanks TravelZoo!). I'll be there over a weekend but not much longer.

Go down and see the temple (outside, as you can't go in) and tabernacle (I believe you can go in).  walk around the area, capital, etc.  Personally I'd get out of SLC and head up to Park City (only a 45 minute drive) and walk around town up there.  Lots of nice places to have dinner since Sundance is there every year and draws a posh crowd.

your in between season- there's a little hike right in back of research park at the University of U.. really good quicky hike- easy hike, and once there-- called the living room.. some boulders set up like a couch and love seat.. although I hope it still there... you can view the city from there... still try to drive the canyon, its  so beautiful, I recommend driving up to Park City out there as well up,,, they have some fun shops on Main street- I used to work with a French Chef, just opened up his own restaurant up there as well I can't think of the name... ,, used to work at a Deer Valley resort so I always like to recommend a nice scenic drive up to Park City... its really only about a 40 minute commute if that depending on where your driving from (what part of town)

I second Park City. Last time I was there was during Sundance, so I didn't get to spend time in downtown Park City (I went horseback riding instead ). But now is the perfect time to go. Actually this time of year is my all time favorite in Utah, so enjoy it! I spend my time a bit north of Salt Lake in Logan/Richmond, so I don't have that many suggestions for Salt Lake specifically.

For more northern Utah suggestions, Bear Lake is pretty cool and is a surreal blue color (kind of like the ocean in the Caribbean) but it's maybe too far for a day trip (2.5 hours one way). But it's a pretty drive up to Logan through a mountain pass and then through another pass to Bear Lake where you can see Wyoming, Utah, and Idaho all at once. They also have a great little ice cream/smoothy place that has homemade raspberry shakes  (though I guess this isn't raspberry season, their shakes are still delicious and they have a million flavors). Logan doesn't have much going on, but it's pretty there and the campus of Utah State is on a hill and has nice views.

Hi decodelighted,

I'm so glad I saw this thread.  I'm a big fan of big-city libraries and miss having a significant one in our current city.  SLC has one of the most fabulous new libraries and it has been recognized as one of the best new libraries in America and by the American Institute of Architects.  If you are interested, it's well worth a visit and there are shops nearby and cultural events.

The Mormon Temple is worth a visit if you are interested in a tour and it's possible to listen in when the Tabernacle Choir is rehearsing if you time it correctly.

This is the SLC main library.

Forgot to update this thread! SLC was very cool. I'd never seen the Rockies up close before. Gorgeous scenery. So spread out though -- kind of like LA or Orlando or something. We did check out Park City ... but weren't in the mood to wander too much. Found some outlets and an open air mall(like LA's Grove kinda) Also went to Antelope Island State Park which had amazing views of water & mountains & antelopes! Or bison, or buffalo or something. Couldn't get out of the car much as there were swarms of biting gnats -- we have some funny pictures of rolling up the car window as a swarm approached. YIKES!!! I also got to try Red Mango frozen yogurt .. which is one of the many Pinkberry knockoffs. It was tasty. And picked up an Anthropologie dress I'd been eyeing in the catalog & some crazy oversized Jackie O sunglasses -- DH had to replace his, as he'd broken them during the trip. Fun fun fun.

THANKS TO EVERYONE who weighed in w/advice! And a special note to D&T ...

Oh D&T ... I'm guessing you're not over 40 with gastro issues. Cuz that "fry sauce" was nearly the death of me. OMG. Here's my stomach: Here's my stomach on "fry sauce": Just a warning to those who might stumble onto this thread sometime in the future. JUST SAY NO. Was also puzzled by the house fave ... a cheeseburger topped with PASTRAMI??? Yeah, no. Yeah I tried it. No ... good.

Oh ... one last thing ... on the flight home I sat next to the real "Rain Man" & his father. Crazy, right? After all the threads about airline courtesy etc it was a hoot to sit next to a guy who talked non-stop for five hours .. mostly repetition of things he'd just said. If it sounds annoying -- it wasn't really. It was kind of interesting & I was glad to have a sweet glimpse at the loving relationship between he & his dad. They held hands much of the flight. And most of his monologue was remembering good times they'd had & funny thing's he'd said before. If you're gonna hear about something over & over ... not bad choices.

Sounds like an interesting place to visit, deco!

And how fascinating about your seatmates on the plane!

~~~ When in doubt...don't.~~~
