Helllo! I have been debating on what to set in my engagement ring. I want something different from a diamond. My birthstone is aquamarine. I thought it would be really unique to go with aquamarine for the center stone. I saw some really neat aqua rings in the photo gallery. I went to my local jeweler and he is dead set against doing aqua. He tried to talk me into a diamond or a sapphire. He even tried to convince me to go with a yellow sapphire he had on hand. I understand that aqua is softer. With that in mind, I would be careful. Are my wishes for an aqua in the center stone insane? Should I just go with a sapphire or a diamond? |

I don't think you're insane. You just have to understand that it is a more delicate stone and that you'll probably have to get it repolished on occasion. Sapphires and diamonds are definitely easier but if that's not what you want then don't get pushed into it.

I don't think your wishes are insane at all. If you love an aqua then why shouldn't you have one? Just keep in mind that aquas are a softer stone and there may come a point in time where you may have to replace the stone due to scratching or chipping. If that doesn't bother you then I say go for it!

Thank you both for your advice. Now to find someone who is willing to do the work.

Well if you understand that you'll have to take it off quite often (especially during manual work in and around the house) and be careful, then you can go with an aqua. A suggestion - are you only into traditional shapes and cuts, or would you maybe consider something like a buff top cut? It could "prolong the life" of your aqua quite a bit, compared to the one with a faceted crown (while still having some shine).

What does a buff top cut look like?

A buff top is where the crown is smooth (like a cabochon) but the pavilion is faceted.

Of course you can have an aqua as an engagement stone. It is, however, not an everyday stone. It has to be removed as soon as you get home, do absolutely no work (cleaning, gardening, etc) in it. You will have to baby it and possibly replace it after a few years, depending upon the wear and tear it undergoes. I know of many jewellers who will set aquamarines so maybe you need to find another jeweller?
