i hadnt heard the term before PS, but the concept of giving a gift at the birth of one's child is very old. the original time for giving an eternity ring was at the birth of a couple's first child.

didn't hear about it until PS and then right afterwards a radio station here talked about it... A woman heard it and then went back to her DH and told him she was due for one push present with interest, he thought that was silly and ended up on the couch for a week...I didn't catch the end result. I told DH and he kinda blew it off... sad

It's a term I've only heard in the past five years. The only person I know who gets push presents is a Asian friend of mine with a wealthy white American husband. She has a lot of kids and has to have a C-section every time, because the babies weigh too much for her to manage. She doesn't get diamonds though. She got varicose veins lasered out one time and she got laser surgery so that she wouldn't have to wear glasses anymore another time. I never got one, never thought of wanting one. I was so happy to have the babies that it was enough for me. My husband was in the delivery room and the look in his eyes when he handed me the babies was enough. A lot of the ladies where I live get those mother's rings with the different colored birthstones and also the necklaces are popular, with a figurine for each kid you have. A lot of the ladies around here wear that for their only jewelry besides the wedding ring. They tend to have at least 4 kids and its prestigious to have necklace with five, six, seven kids figurines on it. I don't have one though - I like kids but don't like the necklaces much. However, everybody is different and if your wife's friends are all getting push presents, you'd probably better get her one. Just be sure that you don't pay so much for it that you kill the budget though. You're going to have other expenses with children! My hubby started saving for the kids education when they were born, and we were able to put one kid through college with no debt and we can pay for the other two even in this current economy AND I was able to be a SAHM. Also, we still have a good retirement account; it took a hit last September but is still decent. these things to me are more valuable than jewelry; something to think about. Black Jade |

Two of my brothers were born when I was old enough to be aware of what was going on. I know my mother asked for (*ahem*) and got a gift after the first birth -- a blender.

You can find lots and lots (and lots) of threads on here about this, if you're interested. As others have said, the term is relatively new, but not necessarily the idea.

My father bought my mother a piece of antique silver for each of their four kids, so it's not a new concept (and my parents don't buy into marketing ploys at all) but the actual term 'push present' I've only heard on PS. My husband is allowing me to spend some of his money on bling after the birth - but then I'm buying him a 'putting up with the whingiest pregnant woman EVER' gift (an upgrade to his engagement camera...) I think it's a nice idea - but I'm not doing this again even for the Crown Jewels!

I'd never heard the term until here. I do know the concept has been around because I remember my uncle giving my aunt a ring of some sort when she had their first baby. I never even thought to suggest or ask for push presents. when I mentioned the concept to my hubby a few years ago he rolled his eyes and said it's another marketing ploy like Sweetest Day.

I never heard of push presents till PS. But knew of people that gave gifts to the mom once the baby was born. I pushed but nothing happened. I had 2 C sections.  Hubby gave me a charm bracelet. I have a charm for DD and DS and have added to it... Love it.

I never heard of it before PS and I have 4 kids! My youngest is 5. I don't know one person in real life that has ever gotten this type of present. I don't think PS is a real representation of real life in terms of buying.

I think it's a good idea. I mean, nothing like a shopping project to keep a woman distracted and in a good mood :) And I think it's a sweet gesture from the guy given that the woman does so much of the (often painful, and uncomfortable) work. Haha, if my hubby doesn't get me on, I'm getting one for myself! And it's typical to give presents on memorable occasions, so I'd hope the birth of your child counts! Hehe. (Personally, I think I'd go for something inexpensive and low maintenance because I wouldn't want to wear something super nice while caring for the new baby, lol)
