I just bought a 2.34 ct. concave spess cut by Richard Homer.  I can't post a picture because it looks like Richard must have taken it off his site.  I am a bit nervous.  I hope I like it! (It's going to Wink first then to me)  It looks a lot like LtlFirecracker's stone I think.  I have always wanted to try a concave cut stone as I think they look pretty neat!  I am stumped as to what to do for a setting though.  All I know is that I would like 18K yellow gold.  I saw this video on Wink's site of Richard Homer's orange sapphire and the setting was done by Ocean Pearlman.  I have mentioned to Wink that I would like a quote from her for a "lady's" version.  Would this be a cool setting?  Or is it too "out there"?  I need ideas that's for sure! Thanks PSers!

Hope the video posts:  http://www.screencast.com/users/WinkJones/folders/Colored%20Gems/media/ba5578f2-5a8b-473a-a81f-a80bef4e3f4f

Yep!  Stripes too-lol!  I have four cats so I am kind of a fan of big cats and little ones.  I just don't want the setting to look over the top.  But if not this setting, I really am at a loss.  (something bezeled at any rate)

Goodness, you have to have a lot of self confidence to pull off the stripes!

I think it will look fine in a lady's version, if only because the stone is much smaller than Richard's.  The thing about a piece like that, is that it becomes a signature piece for you.  As in "Cind11's orange tiger ring".  It isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I think that is great.  Personally, I'm not an orange fan, but I am definitely a fan of individual statement pieces.

I expect that it could be made without the black enamel, which would definitely tone it down.

But, I say that if it speaks to you, GO FOR IT!

Hey,

I think I remember your stone from when I was looking at mine, if it is the one I am thinking of, it is a stunner!

I think YG is great for a spess, that is what I am planning on doing with mine, and I am also planning on getting a quote from Ocean Pearlman too, when these 12-13 hour work days come to an end for me. That won't be another month or so.

How thin do you want the band? I am asking because it it is too thin, the "stripes" may not look like stripes. If you are concerned it is to out there, how bout pave diamonds as the "stripes" that would be a little more subtle, but still cool. Only you can decide weather or not it is too "out there"

Anyways, can't wait to see your stone and what you end up doing with it!

i saw a richard homer spess that was smaller carat wise than my spess but faced up even bigger as it was shallow.....and GORGEOUS!  set simply in 18K gold with prongs that actually helped to protect the ring quite a bit.  don't know where you're at but if you're anywhere near santa cruz, california, call The Vault and see if they still have it and take a drive down for a look see.   i don't think you'll regret this purchase.

I understand what you're saying about it being a "signature piece".  Since the stone is not a traditional cut, I was thinking maybe I'd have some fun with it.  A lot of my jewelry is pretty traditional, but I do have some "funkier" pieces.  I'm sure you're correct, that it could be makde without the black enamel, but then I think I would do a completely different setting.

I'm not sure how thin I would like the band.  I usually like a bit heavier rings.  In fact, if I have one criticism of my James Meyer setting, it is that I wish the shank was wider.  But that is a great point, about the stripes not looking like stripes if it gets too thin.  Did you see the stone on his website?  I assume you don't mean in person.

Edited to add:  What kind of a setting are you contemplating having Ocean do for you?  I saw you mention three different settings on one of your threads.

MZ, I have always admired your ring.  It must be quite a showstopper in person!  I am in Ohio.  The funny thing is I was just in Carmel and SF a week ago on vacation.  I am going to do a search for The Vault and see if they have a website.

It certainly doesn't have to be the "tiger" setting.  I'm entertaining any other ideas!

good grief!  you could have gone to The Vault!!!!  i'm not sure how much they put on the website.........

thanks for the compliments, too.

spess can take chunky settings.  don't hold back if that's what you've got in mind....to say mine is chunky is an understatement.

I found their website.  They have A LOT of jewelry on there.  It is almost overwhelming!  Too bad I didn't know about The Vault when I was in Ca.  Course I didn't know I was getting this stone either-lol.

Your idea certainly is a bit on a daring side, but if you can pull it of I say why not. You can also tone it down a bit by doing the ring in white gold with yellow gold bezel and inlays for the stripes (instead of enamel). Might look interesting.

I think in a more delicate setting with the suggestion of pave diamonds instead of black stripes it would be phenomenal.

Or have black diamonds (or black seed pearls) as leopard dots

i'd wear the ring with stripes......but what i'd really look into is a mokume gane setting for the shank.....think all the layers of metals looking like woodgrain!

again, don't shy away from bold!  if you like the stripes, go for it!  the stripes could also be slimmed down, perhaps more of them but slimmed down.

I'm not so daring as to be able to pull the tiger stripes off but I would love a Mokume Gane ring anytime.  The stripes are more muted and suited to my non flashy nature

What do you mean by "inlays"?  Inlays made out of what?  Black seed pearls sound interesting.  I'm not really a fan of black diamonds.

Pave diamonds might be very pretty.  I wonder if you'd be able to tell they were stripes though?

sigh:  i was originally going to set my spess in mokume gane.....  a mokume gane band with a gold semi-bezel would be lovely AND maybe give you that striped effect you're looking for.

I think it"ll be a very unique ring without being overly in your face with the waves/stripes. It wouldn't hurt to ask your jeweller if she can make one for you.

I searched to look at your wedding bands because I dimly remember your thread about them.  I like them a lot.  I also looked up Chris Ploof since you mentioned him.  He's got some really nice jewelry on his website.  Is Krikawa a jeweler or manufacturer?  When it says the bands are alloyed with "silver", does that mean sterling silver I assume?  I wonder if you could do the ring with 14k white and yellow gold and not silver?  (sterling seems less "precious" to me)
